Baysox stumble in extra innings

baysoxThe Baysox extra-innings struggles continued Friday night as the team fell to the Erie SeaWolves 5-3 in 12 innings. The loss drops the Baysox to 2-9 in extra innings games this season, including three losses to Erie.

The SeaWolves struck first in the top of the second inning against Baysox starter David Hess. Dominic Ficociello hit a one-out double to right field and moved to third base on a Connor Harrell single to left field. Mike Gerber brought Ficociello home with a groundout to second base to give the SeaWolves a 1-0 lead.

Bowie rallied in the bottom of the fourth inning against Erie starter Austin Kubitza. Sharlon Schoop reached on a fielding error by shortstop Gustavo Nunez to lead off the inning and Quincy Latimore then walked. Adrian Marin singled to left field to load the bases and Calvin Drummond then replaced Kubitza on the mound. Auston Wynns brought one run home when he grounded into a force out at second base before Jay Gonzalez walked to load the bases again. A sacrifice fly from Drew Dosch and a Garabez Rosa infield single to third base plated the next two runs to give the Baysox a 3-1 lead.

Erie tied the game in the top of the sixth inning. Ficociello hit a lead-off single to center field and moved to second base on a passed ball. With one out, Gerber doubled to center field to score Ficociello before reliever Bobby Bundy replaced Hess on the mound. Bundy surrendered a single to Grayson Greiner that plated Gerber and tied the game 3-3.

The SeaWolves snapped a streak of five scoreless innings and took control of the game in the top of the 12th inning against Baysox reliever Jon Keller. Nunez reached on a lead-off single to left field but was forced out at second on an Anthony Gose bunt. Corey Jones and Harrell then walked to load the bases with two outs before Michael Zouzalik replaced Keller on the mound. Zouzalik threw a wild pitch to allow a run to score and then walked Gerber to load the bases. Austin Green then reached on a fielder’s choice as Schoop failed to get the out at second base, allowing another run to score and giving Erie a 5-3 lead.

Hess threw 5.1 innings and allowed three runs on nine hits while striking out three in the no decision. Bundy threw 1.2 scoreless innings, allowing three hits and striking out three batters. Reliever Parker Bridwell pitched a scoreless eighth inning, striking out the side and allowing one hit. Reliever Jimmy Yacabonis threw two perfect innings, striking out three batters. Keller threw 1.2 innings and allowed three walks and one hit in the loss. Zouzalik recorded the final out for Bowie, walking one batter and throwing a wild pitch. 

Erie reliever Lendy Castillo earned the win, pitching two scoreless innings and allowing three hits with a strikeout. 

The Baysox are home through Wednesday, July 27 for a seven-game homestand against the Erie SeaWolves and Hartford Yard Goats. The Baysox wrap-up the series with Erie Sunday with the Clubhouse Character Party. Governor Hogan will also be in attendance for the Hair vs. no Hair Bobblection at 2:05 p.m. RHP Matthew Grimes (1-2, 3.57) will make the start for the Baysox and he will be opposed by LHP Josh Turley (4-7, 4.35).
