Baysox outlast Erie in series opener

Baysox 2016John Means and the Baysox outlasted the Erie SeaWolves, 5-4, to put an end to their three-game losing streak Thursday night. Some clutch hitting and opportunistic offense led to the momentum shifting three-run third inning for the Baysox. Outfielder Jay Gonzalez had a stat-filled, exciting Double-A debut with his first hit, run scored and stolen base.

Early in the game, Means ran into some trouble in the second inning. Connor Harrell hit a one-out single to left field and scored on the next pitch as Dominic Ficociello double to left field for the game’s first run.

The Baysox would have an immediate response. In the bottom of the second frame, Sharlon Schoop drew a lead-off walk and moved all the way to third base after a pair of wild pitches from SeaWolves starter Myles Jaye. Chris O’Brien then came through with a RBI single to right field to tie the score 1-1.

In the next half inning Drew Dosch extended his hit streak to seven with a lead-off single to right field and moved to second base on a Garabez Rosa infield single. Chance Sisco reached on a fielder’s choice that forced Rosa out at second base and left runners on the corners. With two outs, Schoop reached on a single and throwing error from Erie third baseman Kody Eaves that allowed Dosch to score. Two more runs came home on a Quincy Latimore single to center field and error from Erie center fielder Anthony Gose to give Bowie a 4-1 lead.

The Baysox would make it three consecutive scoring innings when  Gonzalez recorded his first Double-A hit, a lead-off single to left field, and then stole second base before scoring on a Rosa double to center field to make the score 5-1.

Wynton Bernard came to bat to lead-off the sixth inning. He hit a lead-off double to center field, Gustavo Nunez hit an infield single and Gose walked to load the bases. Jason Krizan brought one run home on a groundout that forced Gose out at second base before reliever Scott McGough replaced Means on the mound to get out of the bases loaded jam and keep the score 5-2.

The SeaWolves determined to get back in the game, would do just that in the eighth inning. Bernard hit a one-out infield single to the pitcher and Nunez followed with a home run to right field to cut the Baysox lead to 5-4.

Means threw 5.1 innings and allowed two runs on four hits while striking out four and walking two in the win. McGough threw 2.2 innings in his Baysox debut and allowed two runs on three hits with a strikeout. Jimmy Yacabonis, made his 18 appearance, and recorded his first save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning.

Jaye threw four innings and allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits while striking out four and walking three in the loss.
