Baysox fanned by Altoona

Baysox 2016The thriving Baysox offense was untracked for a night as Altoona struck out 14 batters sending Bowie to a 2-1 Friday evening defeat. The strikeout total was a season-high for the Baysox.

Bowie took the lead in the first inning before an out was recorded. Julio Borbon reached on an infield single which was followed by a base hit up the middle by Garabez Rosa and a walk to Chance Sisco. Altoona starter Clay Holmes then uncorked a wild pitch and Borbon scored.

But Holmes got off the ropes striking out consecutive hitters before getting a groundout to end the inning. The Baysox would not be able to dent the scoreboard again.

Bowie got another strong start from Brandon Barker (4-2) who worked through seven innings for a third time in his last four starts. Barker got out of a jam in the second inning with a big inning ending double play ball.

Altoona tied the game in the third inning on an RBI-double from Erich Weiss with one down. Runners were at second and third when Harold Ramirez lifted a fly ball to shallow centerfield. The runner at third, Kevin Newman bluffed tagging up and Weiss got caught off second base to end the inning.

In the fifth inning a baserunning blunder cost Altoona again. Chris Diaz rounded second base by too far after hitting a ball down the right field line. Quincy Latimore started a beautiful rally to get Diaz trying to get back to the bag for the second out.

Altoona still pushed home the winning run in the frame however. Newman walked and scored on a Weiss triple to the alley in right-center field.

Borbon had three hits in the game. Stefan Crighton worked a 1-2-3 eighth inning throwing just six pitches. The Baysox are now 3-3 on their week long road trip to Harrisburg and Altoona.

The series concludes Sunday, July 3rd in Altoona with David Hess toeing the slab for the 7:00 p.m. start. Coverage begins 20-minutes prior on 1430-AM WNAV and 99.9 FM in Annapolis.

Bowie returns home for Independence Day Monday, July 4th at 6:35 p.m. Tickets are selling fast! A huge Fireworks extravaganza follows the game! Purchase over the phone at 301-805-6000 or online at baysox.com.
