Baysox end skid with gritty win

Baysox 2016Defensive execution, opportunistic offense and great bullpen work were the ingredients for success as the Baysox ended their three-game losing streak Tuesday night with a 3-2 win over Trenton. The win came in the most improbable fashion as the Baysox scored a pair of unearned runs late in the game to secure a rare one-run victory.

With one out in the bottom of the second inning, Henry Urrutia hit a solo home run down the left field line that bounced off the top of the home run wall to give the Baysox a 1-0 lead.

The first three runs of the game were all scored via the home run ball. However, this time it was the Thunder’s turn.  After carrying a perfect game through three innings, Baysox starter Jason Garcia issued a walk to Tyler Wade to start the fourth inning. Kyle Higashioka recorded Trenton’s first hit of the game with two outs – a two-run homer to give the Thunder a 2-1 lead.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Chance Sisco hit a one-out single to right field and moved to second base when Henry Urrutia reached on an error by Trenton second baseman Tyler Wade. With two outs, J.R. Graham replaced Thunder starter Daniel Camarena on the mound and issued a walk to Quincy Latimore to load the bases. With Austin Wynns batting, Graham was called for a balk that allowed Sisco to score and tie the game 2-2.

The Baysox did their very best to capitalize on Thunder mistakes all evening. In the seventh frame Julio Borbon got all the way to third base on a bunt to lead-off the bottom of the seventh inning after a three-base throwing error by Graham. Garabez Rosa brought Borbon home when he reached on a fielder’s choice to give the Baysox a 3-2 lead.

Garcia threw six innings and allowed two runs on five hits and one walk while striking out five in the no decision. Reliever Michael Zouzalik threw two scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out three in the win. Donnie Hart made his team-high 31st appearance and struck out the side in the ninth inning for his second save.

Graham took the loss for Trenton, 1.1 innings and allowing one unearned run on two walks with two strikeouts.
