Tonight’s rubber match contest was one sided for the most part. After an early lead courtesy of a two-run home run by Joey Terdoslavich, Trenton’s season-high six run third inning broke the game open for the Thunder. The Baysox were forced to try to play catch up all night, but eventually fell short in the 13-8 defeat.
Baltimore Orioles catcher Caleb Joseph joined the Baysox on a Major League Rehab Assignment, batting second as the designated hitter. Joseph finished the game 1-for-5 with a single and three strikeouts.
The game’s first run came in the bottom of the second inning. Garabez Rosa hit a lead-off single to right field against Trenton starter Chance Adams. With one out, Joey Terdoslavich hit the aforementioned two run home run to right field to give the Baysox a 2-0 lead.
Next half inning the Thunder recorded the most runs in a single inning all year. Baysox starter David Hess surrendered a lead-off single to Dante Bichette, Jr. and issued a pair of walks to load the bases with no outs. A wild pitch then brought one run home before Tyler Wade singled to left field for two more runs. After a Dustin Fowler single to right field, Miguel Andujar doubled to center field to plate a run and move Fowler to third where he scored on a Kyle Hagashioka sacrifice fly. Bobby Bundy then replaced Hess on the mound and surrendered an RBI double to Lane Adams that plated the final run of the inning to give Trenton a 6-2 lead.
To follow up their huge inning, the Thunder struck again in the top of the fourth. Jake Skole hit a lead-off double to right field and moved to third base on a one-out single to second base from Wade. Andujar singled to left field to plate Skole and extend the Trenton lead to 7-2.
Baysox reliever Stefan Crichton replaced Bundy on the mound in the top of the fifth inning. Adams began the inning by reaching on a throwing error by Baysox third baseman Drew Dosch. Adams stole second base and scored on a Cito Culver single to right field before a single and a walk loaded the bases. A Michael O’Neill single to center field and Fowler groundout plated two more runs to make the score 10-2.
Bowie responded with Infield singles from Terdoslavich and Drew plus a walk to Adrian Marin loaded the bases with no outs. After a Glynn Davis strikeout and ejection, Julio Borbon brought a run home on a groundout to end the 10-run streak and make the score 10-3.
In the bottom of the sixth frame Chance Sisco hit a lead-off single to center field and Rosa followed with a single to right field. After a two-out wild pitch advanced both runners on base, Marin plated two runs with a double to left-center field. Reliever Caleb Smith then replaced Adams on the mound and issued a walk Dosch and another two-RBI double to left-center field from Henry Urrutia to cut the Thunder lead to 10-7.
Trenton responded with a “boom” next half inning. With two outs, Baysox reliever Jon Keller issued a walk to Andujar and Kyle Hagashioka followed with a home run to left field to give the Thunder a 12-7 lead.
The Baysox refused to go away. Marin hit a one-out triple against Trenton reliever Tyler Jones and Dosch followed with an RBI groundout to make the score 12-8.
In their last at bat Wade hit a one-out triple off Baysox reliever Michael Zouzalik and Andujar followed with a two-out RBI double to center field for the final score of 13-8.
Hess threw 2.1 innings and allowed six runs on four hits and two walks while striking out two in the loss. Bundy threw 1.2 innings and allowed one run on four hits while striking out one batter. Crichton threw one inning and allowed three runs (one earned) on three hits while striking out one and walking one. Keller threw 1.2 innings and allowed two runs on three hits while striking out two and walking two batters. Making his Double-A debut, Zouzalik threw 2.1 innings and allowed one run on three hits while striking out one batter.
Adams picked up the win, his second in as many starts, for Trenton, throwing 5.2 innings and allowing six runs on seven hits while striking out eight and walking one batter.
The Baysox are home through Sunday, June 26 for a six game homestand against the Trenton Thunder and Altoona Curve. Friday, the Baysox open a three-game series against Altoona with Fort Meade Appreciation Night at 7:05 p.m. and postgame fireworks. LHP Jayson Aquino (3-6, 3.66) will pitch for the Baysox and he will be opposed by LHP Brandon Waddell (4-2, 5.22).
