The Maryland Chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society held the 24th Annual Annapolis Leukemia Cup Regatta on June 3rd and 4th. 96 boats participated in the Regatta and $220,000 was raised for the mission of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Leukemia Cup Sailing Regatta is a thrilling series of events that combine the joy of boating with the important task of raising money to cure cancer. The Leukemia Cup Regatta began in Annapolis 24 years ago and has spread to 46 sailing communities across the country. Since its inception, The Leukemia Cup Regattas have raised over 50 million for lifesaving research and patient services, bringing help and hope to patients and their families.
This important community event was kicked off at the Seersucker & Linen Summer Gala, held at the Maritime Museum and catered by Annapolis Yacht Club (AYC) on June 3. Over 200 people attended the event which featured an ice luge for the signature Goslings Dark and Stormy Cocktail, elegant hors d’oeuvres, a fabulous live and silent auction and live Caribbean style entertainment. The night concluded at Gold Sponsor restaurant partner Iron Rooster for the After Party.
On Saturday, June 3, the day kicked off with the Regatta at 10:00am which attracted 96 boats. There were 16 total classes, with a large showing of Cruisers and Racer Cruisers. The Harbor 20s had the largest class with 24 boats on the water. Later in the morning was the “All Hands on Deck” Kids Kruz and Luncheon, Sponsored by Chic-Fil-A and hosted by Eastport Yacht Club. Survivors and their families enjoyed a cruise on the water with Pirate Adventures, and returned to the lawn of EYC for a lunch and painting activity. Governor Hogan, lymphoma survivor, signed each burgee the children painted. The weekend concluded with the 2nd Annual Rock the Dock for a Cure Party and Awards Ceremony at the Eastport Yacht Club. This event featured the Regatta class awards and live entertainment by Swamp Candy Newgrass and Pressing Strings, BBQ by Grills on Wheels, beer, wine and the famous Frozen Mango Goslings Rum drink. Over 300 people attended the event, and a great time was had by sailors and community members. EYC, Sailors for the Sea and Annapolis Green helped facilitate a Gold Certified Clean Regatta and recycling, composting and other green initiatives on the grounds of EYC for the Saturday events. Gary Jobson, National Hall of Fame Sailor and National Chairman of the Leukemia Cup participated in the activities, racing and enjoying the awards party. Sailors and community members also participated in the Off the Water Fundraising Race, with 15 teams and over 40 individuals raising $92,000. John Heintz, a Harbor 20 sailor and leukemia survivor, as well as Patrick Shannon, also a Harbor 20 sailor, tied for the top fundraiser, each raising over $10,000. The Top Fundraising Team was the Harbor 20 fleet, raising $28,936, with Team EYC coming in second raising $18,470 and Team AYC in third at $9,575.
