Improved water access for Anne Arundel County this year

smallwoodboatrmpThe Anne Arundel County Department of Recreation and Parks is pleased to announce expanded water access throughout the county this year.

Mayo Beach Park Public Open Days are free and open to the general public. Visitors can pack a lunch, bring their canoe, kayak, windsurfer or paddle board and enjoy a beautiful Sunday afternoon. A shallow beach area is available for water play and wading.  Hours are from 11am-5pm. The park is located at 4150 Honeysuckle Drive, Edgewater.  2016 Public Open Days are as follows:  May 30 (Monday); June 5, 12, 19; July 3, 10, 17, 31; August 7, 14, 21; September 5 (Monday), 11, 18 and 25.

Fort Smallwood Park is now home to the first county-owned public boat ramp.  The ramp is open seven days a week from 5:30am until 10:00pm.  Citizens can use the ramp to launch private pleasure craft of 28 feet or less in length, and 8’ 6” feet in width. More information regarding boat ramp rules and regulations can be found on the Recreation and Parks website: www.aacounty.org/RecParks.  Fort Smallwood Park is located at 9500 Fort Smallwood Road, Pasadena.

Fort Smallwood Park is also expanding water access to include public swimming at the park.  The park will begin allowing swimming during park hours on Saturday, May 28, 2016.  Park entry fees will apply; daily park entry fee is $6.00 per vehicle or an annual pass can be purchased for $30.00 per vehicle for Anne Arundel County residents and $40.00 per vehicle for non-county residents.

“We live in one of the most beautiful places, but for many citizens it has been hard to get to the water,” states County Executive Steve Schuh, “but, increasing water access in Anne Arundel County will give our citizens more opportunities to interact with the environment and engage in the natural beauty of the area.”
