Annapolis City Attorney Michael Leahy has submitted his resignation and will be taking a position with the State of Maryland in the administration of Governor Larry Hogan. Leahy was appointed to the Transportation Authority Board by Hogan in July 2015.
Leahy was appointed as City Attorney midway through Mayor Pantelides’ 1st year in office. After terminating the former City Attorney, Pantelides’ nominee, Tim Murnane, was blocked by the City Council until he finally withdrew his nomination. Leahy was the replacement and was unanimously approved by the City Council.
The Annapolis City Attorney is tasked with defending the City in lawsuits brought against it as well as crafting the legislation that is presented before and from the City Council. The office is run by an Assistant City Attorney as well as several others.
The Mayor’s Office has not yet released a statement on Leahy’s departure.
