Yard Goats steal past Baysox

Baysox2016Monday night’s contest against the Eastern Division leading Hartford Yard Goats was a slugfest that Bowie lost 9-5. Hartford was relentless on the base paths with a season-high seven steals against the Baysox to propel them to the victory.

After a scoreless first inning for Baysox starter Jayson Aquino, Ryan McMahon was hit-by-pitch to lead off the second inning and then stole second base prior to scoring on an Ashley Graeter single to right field to give Hartford a 1-0 lead.

The Yard Goats followed up with another two runs in the top of the third. David Dahl drew a one out walk and stole second base before moving to third base on Pat Valaika’s single to left field.  Rosell Herrera made it two consecutive singles to plate a run. McMahon then doubled to left-center field to drive home the second run of the inning and give the Yard Goats a 3-0 lead.

As the Baysox bats remained silent, Hartford stayed on the attack. In the fifth inning, Valaika hit a lead-off single to left field and proceeded to steal second base. He moved to third on a Herrera groundout. The Yard Goats then hit back-to-back doubles courtesy of McMahon and Jan Vazquez that brought home a couple of runs to make the score 5-0.

After being held hitless threw 4.2 innings, the Baysox were able to score a run in the bottom of the fifth frame against Hartford starter Harrison Musgrave. Joey Terdoslavich drew a lead-off walk but was forced out at second on a groundball fielder’s choice off the bat of Drew Dosch. Dosch moved to second base on a groundout and scored on a two-out single to center field from Jeff Kemp to make the score 5-1.

The following innings were uneventful, but Hartford added an insurance run in the top of the eighth inning. Zach Osborne hit a lead-off single to third base against Baysox reliever Eric Fornataro. He advanced to third base on a pair of groundouts and eventually scored on a Dahl double to left field to increase the Hartford lead, 6-1.

The Baysox would not go quietly as they got to Hartford reliever Konner Wade in the bottom of the eighth inning. Glynn Davis hit a lead-off double off the wall in left field and with one out, Mike Yastrzemski homered to cut the Hartford lead in half, 6-3.

In the top of the ninth frame reliever Genison Reyes came in to pitch. He had a tough time finding the strike zone as he issued a one out walk to McMahon. Vazquez followed up with a single to left field that moved McMahon to third base. He wound up scoring on a Graeter sacrifice bunt, which was mishandled by Terdoslavich charging from first. Both runners moved up a base on wild pitch and Osborne then walked to load the bases. With two outs, Ashur Tolliver replaced Reyes on the mound and immediately surrendered a double to Raimel Tapia that scored two more runs and made the score 9-3.

In the bottom of the ninth, Terdoslavich sparked a Baysox rally with a solo home run to right field to lead off the inning. With two outs, the Baysox loaded the bases after Kemp reached on a fielder’s choice and a pair of walks. Yastrzemski singled through a hole at second base to score Jeff Kemp to bring up the tying runner at the plate. Hartford then brought into the game reliever Matt Carasiti and on the first pitch with bases loaded Quincy Latimore popped up to first base in foul territory.

Baysox starter Aquino threw 4.1 innings and allowed five runs on nine hits while striking out one and walking two in the loss.
