Schuh includes $10MM in budget for local elementary schools

aacpsCounty Executive Steve Schuh and County Council Chairman Derek Fink today announced that the County Administration will submit a $10 million supplemental budget request to accelerate the Edgewater, Tyler Heights and Richard Henry Lee elementary school improvement projects.

“The budget I submitted to the County Council makes my commitment to education very clear because it includes historic funding levels for teachers, staff and facilities,” said Schuh. “After listening to the Board of Education, the County Council, the County Delegation to the General Assembly, educators and parents, I have committed to doing everything in my power to accelerate construction of Edgewater, Tyler Heights and Richard Henry Lee Elementary Schools. My goal is to have no interruptions in the process from feasibility, to design, to construction.

“I would especially like to thank Councilman Chris Trumbauer for his leadership on school construction and for sharing with us his priorities and concerns about the original development schedule and Council Chairman Derek Fink for working with us to develop this supplemental budget request,” said Schuh

The supplemental budget request to be introduced to the County Council will include the following:

  • An additional $3.3 million for design of Edgewater Elementary School (FY18 and FY19)
  • An additional $3.5 million for design of Tyler Heights Elementary School (FY18 and FY19)
  • An additional $3 million for design of Richard Henry Lee Elementary School (FY18 and FY19)

The six-year Capital Improvement Program allows for flexibility to adjust the timing of projects in later years. Construction of these elementary schools can be accelerated to the maximum extent possible due to changing fiscal outlook, state school construction funding levels and lower-than-expected construction bids.

“Redistricting also plays a critical role in ensuring that we maximize the funding approved for school construction,” Schuh said. “Building schools is a long-term solution. I hope the Board of Education will re-consider all options to alleviate overcrowding at Tyler Heights Elementary School.”

The budget was officially submitted to the County Council on May 2 for the Fiscal Year that begins July 1.
