Anne Arundel County Public Schools received recommendations for an additional $16.6 million for major school construction projects in the final round of state funding deliberations this month, bringing the total allocated in the coming fiscal year to a record $44.6 million.
“This is just phenomenal news for our school system, our employees, and, most importantly, for our students,” Superintendent George Arlotto said. “We have worked very hard over the years to improve the educational environments for our children, and the state has been a key partner in that effort.”
The funding level surpasses the $36.4 million AACPS received from the state in the current fiscal year.
The latest Fiscal Year 2017 recommendations from the Interagency Committee on School Construction (IAC) must still be approved by the Board of Public Works next month. That Board consists of Governor Larry Hogan, Comptroller Peter Franchot, and Treasurer Nancy Kopp.
“All three members of the Board, as well as the IAC, have been staunch supporters of our efforts, I suspect because they see a significant return on their investment in Anne Arundel County,” Dr. Arlotto said. “Their approval will signal the dawn of an even brighter day for many children across our county.”
In the latest round of funding recommendations, the IAC approvals include:
- $4.3 million to complete the replacement of Severna Park High School, bringing the FY2017 total to $13.6 million
- $4.3 million to begin the renovation and addition at Manor View Elementary School in FY2017.
- $6.7 million to begin the renovation and addition at High Point Elementary School in FY2017.
- $1.1 million for the construction of a gymnasium at Millersville Elementary, which is in addition to the $1.1 million previously approved for the construction of a gymnasium at Woodside Elementary.
