Baysox slip in rubber match

Baysox2016Wednesday morning’s series finale featured a steady rain which did not make for ideal playing conditions as the Yard Goats won the series finale, 6-4, giving Bowie their series lost in the month of May.

Hartford got the scoring started immediately off of Baysox starter Parker Bridwell. David Dahl hit a one out single to left field and Pat Valaika immediately followed up with a two-run homerun to left-center field to give the Yard Goats the 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the third inning, Jeff Kemp picked up the Baysox first hit of the game against Hartford starter Zach Jemiola with one out. Adrian Marin was then hit-by-a-pitch. Two batters later Mike Yastrzemski hit a scorching line drive home run to right field to give the Baysox a 3-2 advantage.

Both teams’ bats went quiet until the Yard Goats struck again in the top of the sixth inning. Ryan McMahon drew a lead-off walk and moved to third base when Dillon Thomas reached on a throwing error by Baysox third baseman Tucker Nathans. Correlle Prime walked with two outs to load the bases and Michael Benjamin then brought two runs home with a single to center field to give the Yard Goats a 4-3 lead.

In the bottom of the seventh frame, Hartford reliever Matt Pierpont replaced started Zach Jemiola. Pierpoint issued a one out walk to Jeff Kemp, who then stole second base. After getting the next batter out, Borbon singled to shortstop to score Kemp from second. Borbon advanced to second base on a throwing error by Valaika.

Hartford tacked on additional insurance runs in the eighth and ninth innings. In the top of the eighth, reliever Stefan Crichton issued a lead-off walk to Roselle Herrera. Herrera advanced to second base after a sac bunt by Dillon Thomas. Another ground out moved Herrera to third base and he eventually scored on a single to right field by Prime to make the score 5-4 Yard Goats.

In their final plate appearance, Rafael Tapia led off with a walk and advanced to second on a sac bunt by Dahl. Tapia scored on a Valaika single to center field to give the Yard Goats the 6-4 lead.

Bridwell garnered the no decision and threw 5.2 innings, allowed four runs (two earned) on six hits while striking out two and walking five. Reliever Donnie Hart threw 1.1 scoreless innings, striking out one batter. Crichton took the loss, throwing two innings and allowing two runs on two hits and two walks.

Pierpont picked up the win for Hartford, throwing one inning in relief and allowing one run on one hit and two walks while striking out two batters.

Thursday, the Baysox then head to Erie for a four game road trip before returning home Tuesday, April 17 for a three-game rematch of the Eastern League Championship Series against the Reading Fightin Phils. LHP Chris Lee (5-0, 2.30) will pitch for the Baysox and he will be opposed by RHP Myles Jaye (0-4, 5.28).
