MSP chase ends in crash that claims life of innocent motorist

Police ChaseA Baltimore City man who fled an attempted traffic stop yesterday afternoon, driving northbound in the southbound lanes of Aviation Boulevard, crashed into an oncoming vehicle, claiming the life of another motorist.

The victim was pronounced deceased at the scene. Identification of the victim is pending next of kin notification.

The accused is identified as Johnathan Simms, 31, of the 2300 block of Eutaw Place in Baltimore. He was  transported from the scene by ambulance to the Baltimore Washington Medical Center where he remains in police custody, while receiving medical treatment.  Multiple charges are pending.

About 3:45 p.m. yesterday, Trooper First Class Kline of the Glen Burnie Barrack was on patrol when she observed Simms driving a silver 2015 Toyota Camry, traveling 17 miles per hour over the posted 55mph speed limit, eastbound on Route 100 in Glen Burnie.  With emergency lights activated, she attempted to make the traffic stop. Simms, the sole occupant of the Toyota Camry, failed to yield to her marked patrol vehicle.

Simms accelerated to high rates of speed, taking the ramp onto westbound 170 and continued on to Dorsey Road. He then made a left turn, traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of Aviation Boulevard, subsequently crashing head on into an oncoming vehicle, operated by the victim.  The crash occurred within one quarter of a mile from the Glen Burnie Barrack.

Officers from the Anne Arundel County Police Department responded to assist. Personnel from the State Highway Administration also responded to assist with detours. Southbound lanes of Aviation Boulevard from Cromwell Park Drive to Dorsey Road remain closed while the CRASH Team conducts a reconstruction of the crash.

The Anne Arundel County State’s Attorney will be consulted regarding the  pending charges.  Anyone who may have witnessed the crash or events leading up to the crash, are urged to contact state police investigators at the Glen Burnie Barrack at 410-761-5130.
