Bowie falters in 8-6 loss to Richmond

Baysox2016In a shootout, Bowie dropped the series-opener for their second loss in as many nights, losing to Richmond 8-6 Monday evening. Hitting was at a premium this game as the Flying Squirrels had 11 hits through only four innings. They finished the game with an opponent season-high 16 hits.           

The Baysox jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first inning against Richmond starter Tyler Beede. OF Julio Borbon hit a lead-off triple to right field and scored on a OF Mike Yastrzemski ground out to give Bowie a 1-0 lead. 

OF Quincy Latimore gave the Baysox a 2-0 lead with a solo home run to left field in the bottom of the second inning. 

Things began to unravel for the Baysox and starting LHP Jayson Aquino in the top of the third inning. With one out and a runner on first, Aquino committed a throwing error on a fielder’s choice ground ball to put runners on the corners. Three hits and an RBI ground out later, the Baysox trailed the Flying Squirrels 4-2.

Bowie got a run back in the bottom half of the inning. Yastrzemski reached on a fielder’s choice at second base and advanced to second base on a wild pitch. 2B Corban Joseph then brought him home with a single to left field to make the score 4-3. 

The Flying Squirrels kept the runs coming in the top of the fourth inning. Richmond batters singled five times in the inning while the Baysox managed just one out to push three more runs across and take a commanding 7-3 lead.

Richmond added another run in the top of the fifth inning against Baysox reliever RHP Stefan Crichton. With two outs, 1B Myles Schroder was hit-by-a-pitch and stole second base before scoring on the 2B Ali Castillo single to center field to make the score 8-3. 

The Baysox added a run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Yastrzemski hit a lead-off single to center field and moved to second base on a Joseph single to left field. After a wild pitch advanced both batters, C Chance Sisco brought Yastrzemski home on a ground out to make the score 8-4. 

Bowie, determined to get back into the game, got another run back in the bottom of the seventh inning against Richmond reliever LHP Christian Jones. Bowie SS Adrian Marin drew a lead-off walk and moved to second base on a wild pitch. He got to third base on a ground out and scored on another ground out from OF Glynn Davis to cut the Richmond lead to 8-5.

Down three runs in the ninth, Latimore led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second base after Marin single to right-center field. After two strikeouts Latimore scored on Borbon single, but the threat was thwarted after Richmond reliever RHP Jake Smith struck out the side. 

Aquino threw four innings and allowed seven runs (three earned) on 11 hits while striking out one in the loss. Crichton threw two innings and allowed a run on three hits while striking out one batter. Reliever LHP Ashur Tolliver threw a scoreless seventh inning, allowing one hit. Reliever LHP Donnie Hart threw a scoreless eighth inning, allowing one hit and striking out one. Reliever RHP Jason Stoffel threw a one-two-three ninth inning for the Baysox. 

Beede earned the win for Richmond, throwing six innings and allowing four runs on nine hits while striking out four and walking one.

On Tuesday, the Baysox play the second game in a three game home series against the Richmond Flying Squirrels. RHP Joe Gunkel (0-3, 4.50) will pitch for the Baysox and he will be opposed by LHP Adalberto Mejia (0-0, 2.30).

The Baysox are home through Wednesday, April 27 for a seven-game homestand against the Harrisburg Senators and Richmond Flying Squirrels. Promotional highlights include Dollar Dog Night Tuesday, April 26 at 6:35 p.m. and Military Appreciation Night Wednesday, April 27 at 6:35 p.m.
