Baysox stumble in series finale

Baysox 2016Bowie failed to complete a four-game series sweep of Harrisburg, losing to the Senators 6-3 Sunday afternoon. The loss for the Baysox (8-9) is only their second in the past nine games after they started the year 1-7. The Baysox pitching staff tied a season-high with 10 walks in the game to go along with 10 hits for the Senators.

Harrisburg jumped out to another early lead in the top of the first inning against Baysox starter RHP Jason Garcia. SS Wilmer Difo drew a one-out walk and proceeded to steal second base. Back-to-back singles from DH Shawn Pleffner and 2B Chris Bostick brought Difo home. OF Brenden Webb followed suit with a two-out double to left field that plated a second run and gave the Senators the 2-0 lead.

Starting at first base for the first time this season for Bowie, Chris O’Brien hit his first home run of the season to right field in the bottom of the second inning to cut the Senator lead in half  2-1.

The Senators added to their lead in the top of the fourth inning. Bostick hit a lead-off single before C Spencer Kieboom and Webb both walked to load the bases. OF Zach Collier brought one run home with a single to center field and then 1B Stephen Perez followed with a sacrifice fly to give Harrisburg a 4-1 lead.

Control continued to be an issue for the Baysox pitching staff in the top of the fifth inning as Harrisburg kept piling on the runs. Difo drew a lead-off walk and scored on a Pleffner double to left field before Bowie reliever RHP Jon Keller replaced Garcia on the mound. Keller proceeded to walk two batters and throw a pair of wild pitches that allowed a second run to score and give the Senators a 6-1 lead.

The Baysox, however, would not go quietly as they put on a valiant effort with a ninth inning rally against Senators reliever RHP Derek Self. With one out, 3B Drew Dosch walked and eventually reached second base on defensive indifference. OF Mike Yastrzemski scored Dosch on a double to left-center field. 2B Corban Joseph continued his impressive day and notched his fourth single of the day to bring home Yastrzemski and cut the Senators lead to 6-3. Reliever RHP Juan Gutierrez replaced Self and got DH Trey Mancini to ground out to end the rally and the game.

Garcia threw four innings and allowed six runs on eight hits while striking out two and walking four in the loss. Keller came in for Garcia in the fifth inning and allowed both inherited runners to score, walking three batters and striking out two. Making his Orioles debut, reliever RHP Genison Reyes threw two scoreless innings and allowed one hit while walking three and striking out two. Reliever RHP Garrett Cortright pitched a scoreless ninth inning, allowing one hit and striking out two.

Senators starter RHP Jaron Long lasted just 3.2 innings for Harrisburg so reliever Andrew Robinson picked up the win. Robinson threw 2.1 scoreless innings in relief while allowing three hits, walking one and striking out one batter.

The Baysox are back at it on Monday when they host a three-game home series against the Richmond Flying Squirrels. LHP Jayson Aquino (1-1, 4.76) will pitch for Bowie and he will be opposed by RHP Tyler Beede (0-1, 4.20).
