Ballet Theatre of Maryland presents Innovations 2016 this weekend

BTM_Heidi_Erickson_5946April 15th-17th, The Ballet Theatre of Maryland (BTM) presents their final production of the season, Innovations 2016 at Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts. Filled with emotion and fueled by passion – a daring journey to the edges of classical and contemporary dance, Innovations will captivate and enthrall.

After a successful performance of Sleeping Beauty at the Lyric in Baltimore, the BTM dancers tackle strength, versatility, passion, power and emotion as they explore the depths of dance through a potpourri of challenging works including three world premieres. Innovations 2016 features new works by established, New York composer, Kevin Keller, emerging composer, Ryan Lucas, and upcoming choreographer Heidi Erickson.

Keller has created musical scores for such prestigious choreographers as Amy Marshall, Dwight Rhoden, and Elisa Monte. “I am drawn strongly to dance because it ‘s an all-encompassing art form where movement, lighting, costumes, and music combine to express emotions and tell stories” explains Keller. Artistic Director Dianna Cuatto is “excited to create movement to Keller’s composition of ‘pure expressionism’ in which music and dance explore a diverse range of emotions depicting repeating cycles we experience through life.” The piece is appropriately named Cycle.

Unlike Keller, this is Ryan Lucas’s first sojourn into composing for the world of dance. Intimate Encounters offers a glimpse into relationships that occur in moments as we weave into and out of each other’s lives. Inspired by simplicity and minimalism, Ryan’s emotional and expressive sensitivity bring Intimate Encounters to life for Cuatto’s flowing neo-classical contemporary interpretation.

Heidi Erickson makes her BTM choreographic debut with A Tribute to the Masters, featuring great classic composers from Vivaldi to Mozart and beyond. Heidi has dazzled audiences with her skill as one of BTM’s professional dancers – now, through the ever evolving, classical language of dance, you will experience Heidi’s unique, fresh approach in bringing the works of these great composers to life . “As a dancer and choreographer with the company, I am grateful for the opportunity to share this piece in celebration of great composers and highlight the talented dancers of BTM” explains Ms. Erickson.

Rounding out the program are two more works from BTM’s repertory: Episodes, a neo-romantic work set to Rachmaninov’s music, and Bolero, which showcases the company’s highly dynamic female dancers in a spirited, sensuous presentation of this passionate work.

Immediately following the final performance on April 17th, The Ballet Theatre of Maryland will host a season Grande Finale Party. Be among the first to know what the 2016/2017 season will hold as Artistic Director Dianna Cuatto announces performances and shares BTM news. The Grand Finale Party is included for April 17th ticket holders.
