Annapolis Yacht Club expands racing slate this season

aycEvery Chesapeake sailing season includes special events with opportunities for boats that are not typically part of the racing fleet. These special events are designed to be attractive for boat owners and crews who are not frequent racers.

In an effort to extend the appeal of its events to a broader spectrum of sailors, this year, the Annapolis Yacht Club will feature Cruising Spinnaker, Cruising Non-Spinnaker, Shorthanded Spinnaker, and Shorthanded Non-Spinnaker starts at its 80th Annual Regatta (June 11) and its Fall Series Distance Race (October 8). Each of the AYC races will feature a government mark course with a fixed course published in advance.

It is hoped that these races will attract members of cruising clubs and other sailors who have not previously participated in AYC events or have not been on an AYC starting line in some time. To that end, AYC aims to make it as easy as possible to get on the starting line for these and other events. A pre-requisite for participation in these events is a PHRF rating for each boat.

In the wake of the fire that heavily damaged its Main Clubhouse on December 12, 2015, the Annapolis Yacht Club announced that its entire 2016 racing calendar will continue as scheduled, including Frostbite Races, Wednesday Night Races, Junior Regattas, Charity Regattas, and all annual and scheduled weekend races. In fact, a Frostbite Race was held the day after the fire, with great assistance from neighboring Eastport Yacht Club and Severn Sailing Association.

The Annapolis Yacht Club’s Eastport properties were not damaged by the fire. The Annapolis Yacht Club’s Race Management office is located at these Eastport properties, as are the Club’s race management equipment and its fleet of regatta support vessels. None of these assets were impacted by the fire.

The 2016 Annapolis Yacht Club schedule includes the Annapolis NOOD Regatta, the U.S. Women’s Match Racing Championship, the J/105 East Coast Championship, and several other national events.

The 2016 schedule also includes the annual AYC-hosted fundraising regatta for Chesapeake Region Accessible Boating (CRAB). AYC’s leadership role in the Annapolis Leukemia Cup and Hospice Cup charity regattas will continue as well.
