Police charge man with murder of infant in Odenton motel

On Monday, March 7, 2016 at approximately 11:37 a.m., Anne Arundel County Police and Fire Department Personnel responded to the Royal Inn located in the 1600 block of Annapolis Road, Odenton, Maryland in reference to a possible cardiac incident involving a two year old child. Fire personnel transported the child, identified as Michael Lee-Ashley Stem a 2 year old male staying at the Royal Inn, to Baltimore Washington Medical Center. Medical professionals rendered aid but Michael Stem was later pronounced deceased.

Anne Arundel County Homicide detectives responded to investigate the two year olds death. A canvass of the hotel as well as several interviews were completed to include family members and associates of the child. Detectives secured and executed a search warrant on the room where the child went unresponsive looking for what caused the death of Michael Stem. During the search detectives recovered items of evidentiary value from the hotel room.

On Tuesday, March 8, 2016, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner performed an autopsy on the child. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner ruled the cause of Michael Stem’s death as blunt force trauma with the manner being homicide. The medical examiner reported the injury Michael Stem received would have disabled him shortly after he had received it. This is the first Anne Arundel County homicide of 2016.

Through witness interviews, the boyfriend of the mother, Dason Darius Hogan, had begun watching Michael Stem the morning of Monday, March 7, 2016 after the mother left for work. Video surveillance showed Dason Hogan walk three children to the bus stop and return shortly thereafter with Michael in good health. Video surveillance showed no one else enter or exit the hotel room until after the mother is called and responded back due to Michael’s medical condition.

After interviewing Dason Hogan detectives learned he had given conflicting statements as to what had occurred in the hotel room that morning. On Thursday, March 10, 2016, homicide detectives secured an arrest warrant charging Dason Hogan with First Degree Murder, Second Degree Murder, Child Abuse First Degree Death, First Degree Assault and Second Degree Assault in the death of Michael Stem. On Friday, March 11, 2016, detectives located Dason Hogan at the Royal Inn located in the 1600 block of Annapolis Road, Odenton Maryland where he was taken into custody without incident.
