2 Severn women found guilty of child abuse

child-abuse-genericAnne Arundel County State’s Attorney announced that, after a 2-day jury trial before the Honorable Judge Mulford, defendants Javonie Harper, 32, and Crystal Evans, 37, of Severn, were found guilty of second degree child abuse and second degree assault on Friday, February 5, 2016.

“Child abuse is inexcusable. No child should be beaten,” said Anne Arundel County State’s Attorney Wes Adams. “I will fight to protect our smallest citizens and appreciate the jury for recognizing the evil actions of these two women whom this child should have been able to trust to care for him.”

On August 3, 2015, the two defendants took turns beating a 9-year-old child who resided in the home with a belt after he took candy from the home without permission. The child suffered severe bruising as a result of being struck by both defendants for several minutes with the belt.

“The photo evidence in this case was extremely disturbing and some of the worst I’ve ever seen in my time as a prosecutor,” said Adams.

The defendants face up to 15 years of incarceration for the child abuse counts, and ten years for the second degree assault.
