Winter fun in Maryland

ice rinkTemperatures are dropping, but winter activities are just heating up. From carving the slopes to spinning on the ice, fun never hibernates in Maryland. So dig out the boots, gloves and hats and throw open the door because winter is beckoning you to come out and play.

“Whether it is outdoor sports for the winter enthusiast or getting warm by a fire, Maryland offers cold-weather activities for residents and visitors alike to enjoy,” said Liz Fitzsimmons, executive director, Maryland Office of Tourism. “Don’t miss the fresh air of mountain trails, guided snowshoe trips through state parks and the variety of opportunities to experience Maryland’s winter playground.”

Gear up in your cold-weather finest and head to Wisp Resort in Garrett County.  Maryland’s full-service ski resort is the perfect place to hit the slopes and offers plenty of alternative winter activities, including snowshoeing, ice skating and cross country skiing. Experience the excitement aboard the mountain coaster, boasting a 1,300-foot uphill track. Riders take in views of Deep Creek Lake while twisting and turning for 3,500 feet downhill, with more than a 350-foot vertical drop on the eastern side of Wisp Mountain. Visitors can also race the wind during a guided snowmobile tour or snow tubing

Put on an extra layer, and head outside for winter fun at Maryland’s outdoor ice rinks. Perfect your skills and take lessons at Quiet Waters Park in Annapolis or Glen Burnie Outdoor Ice Skating. Visit Skating at The Square in Rockville, the largest outdoor ice skating rink between Baltimore and Washington, D.C. Take a break from dining and shopping in downtown Silver Spring, and plan a session on the ice at Silver Spring Ice Skating at Veterans Plaza. Light up your night with fun colors while skating along the waterfront at the Hutchins Park Ice Rink in Havre de Grace. Whether you’re a professional or skating for the first time, outdoor ice skating rinks offer a great family outing or fun date night.

Embrace the great outdoors for winter camping.  Many of Maryland’s state parks offer rustic cabins, including Shad Landing at Pocomoke River State Park, Gunpowder Falls State Park, Herrington Manor State Park and Rocky Gap State Park. Several Maryland state parks also offer cross country skiing and snowshoeing, including New Germany State Park, Seneca Creek State Park, Tuckahoe State Park and Smallwood State Park.

Add to your treasure collection, and visit the icy shores of the Chesapeake to hunt for unique sea glass. Tolchester Beach in Chestertown, Deal Island Beach in Deal Island and Matapeake Beach in Kent Island are ideal locations to begin your search. Take advantage of the light reflection from the snow and ice after a winter storm, and look for that glistening sparkle to find your very own winter treasures.
