Thucydides and the Meaning of Words

stjohns“Words had to change their ordinary meaning and to take that which was now given them,” wrote Thucydides during the horrors of the civil war in Corcrya. In his lecture “Thucydides, Corcyra and the Meaning of Words” St. John’s College tutor Caleb Thompson will look closely at the translation of that passage, reflect on the nature of meaning, and consider in detail Thucydides’ use of the word ‘courage.’ The lecture, which is free and open to the public, will be held in the Great Hall at St. John’s College on Friday, January 15 at 8 p.m.

Thompson earned his bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Clark University and his master’s and doctorate in philosophy from the University of Virginia. He joined the St. John’s, Santa Fe faculty in 1996.
