Christmas tree cause of house fire in Eaastport this afternoon

On Saturday, January 9, 2016, at 12:46 PM the Annapolis Fire Department was dispatched to 915 Jackson Street, for a possible building fire. The first arriving unit reported smoke showing from the dwelling. The fire crews made an aggressive attack on the fire and the fire was placed under control at 1:12 PM. There have been no reports of injuries to any of the fire fighters or civilians.

The fire brought approximately 13 pieces of fire apparatus, and approximately 35 firefighters to the scene. The Annapolis City Fire Department received mutual aid from the Anne Arundel County Fire Department and the United States Naval Academy Fire Department.

Although the cause of the fire remains under investigation, the area of origin of the fire was in the area of a live Christmas Tree in a first floor living room. The tree was bought several weeks ago, and it was planned to be removed from the house tomorrow. There was no one home at the time of the fire; it was called into 911 dispatch by a neighbor. The home is a two story single family home. There is fire damage to the first floor, and heat and smoke damage throughout the rest of the house. The damage estimates are placed at approximately $100,00. There were no civilian or fire fighter injuries.

Fire Chief David Stokes, from the Annapolis Fire Department would like to remind everyone to take a proactive approach to fire safety. The holiday season is coming to an end, and if not already done, now is the time to remove your Christmas decorations. This is especially true for any live trees or wreaths. These items dry out fairly quickly and when dry, they create a great fire risk. When they burn, they create a very fast moving fire, with very intense heat and smoke.
