Severna Park teens establish tutoring program for Seeds 4 Success

Seeds4successNine Severna Park students, led by seniors Becca Collings and Ally Nagel from the school’s Leadership Institute, partnered with the Annapolis-based Seeds 4 Success program to help the children learn higher-level academic skills such as long division with decimals, the Scientific Method, and sentence composition.

The Seeds 4 Success program provides mentoring and tutoring services to Annapolis children living in public or subsidized housing with the goal of helping them become healthy, successful adults. According to program director John Palinski, “the adults who currently provide the bulk of tutoring are long separated from Algebra II and science labs, and many are confounded by “new math.”’

The Severna Park students brought their targeted tutoring program to Seeds’ Eastport Girls Club program for girls grades 4-7 and I Am a Reader program for boys grades 1-3. Along with subject-matter help, the students also played games with the kids and helped them to prepare for upcoming exams before the winter break.

The program will continue into January and Nagel and Collings hope that it will be continued by Severna Park Leadership students next year.
