High school students sought for national math competition

aaccStudents seeking a math challenge are invited to register for the 67th annual American Mathematical Competitions that will meet from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2016 on Anne Arundel Community College’s Arnold campus, 101 College Parkway. The deadline for registration is Jan. 15.

Two competitions meet that day, the AMC 10, which is open to students in the 10th grade or below who are under 17.5 years of age on the day of the competition; and the AMC 12, open to all high school students under 19.5 years of age on the day of the competition.

Sponsored by the Mathematical Association of America, the AMC competitions are designed to pose problems that are more challenging than typically encountered in mathematics courses. The competitions are well known, with many colleges and universities asking for AMC scores on their applications.

Both tests have 25 multiple-choice questions and last 75 minutes. The AMC 10 contains problems that can be understood and solved with algebra and geometry concepts. The AMC 12 contains problems which can be understood and solved with precalculus concepts.

For more details, visit http://www.aacc.edu/math. While the competition is free, an online preparatory course costs $10 and is available at http://amc.edfinity.com. To register, contact the contest manager, Jim Hall, at [email protected] no later than Jan. 15.
