Anne Arundel Community College donated $3,152, 150 boxes of complete Thanksgiving meals and 17 boxes of additional nonperishable food for Food Link’s Thanksgiving food drive. Each complete box contained one can cream of mushroom soup, one can crispy onions, three cans corn, one large box mashed potatoes, one jar turkey or chicken gravy, one large can candied yams, one can cranberry sauce, one box cornbread or roll mix, two boxes of stuffing and one dessert – either cake and icing or pumpkin pie mix with evaporated milk and pie crust.

The college community responded to an email from Susie Orner, chair of the college’s Professional and Support Staff Organization’s Community Service Committee, which organized the college-wide food drive. She provided statistics from United Way of Central Maryland showing that Anne Arundel County has 1,348 homeless students and 37.1 percent of children in the county participate in the free and reduced-cost meals program. In addition, about 300,000 people who live in Central Maryland do not have adequate food or access to healthy foods.

“We are overwhelmed with your generosity,” wrote Cathy Bird, executive director of Food Link. “So many families will be touched by your caring hearts.”
