The youths on the “some trashy name” team from Redland Middle School in Montgomery County make notations about their robot’s progress at the 5th annual “Battle by the Bay” FIRST® LEGO® League (FLL) qualifier tournament in December at Anne Arundel Community College. The team is one of three headed for the state tournament at University of Maryland Baltimore County in March 2016.

About 100 students, plus coaches, mentors and parents participated in Anne Arundel Community College’s 5th annual “Battle by the Bay” FIRST® LEGO® League (FLL) qualifier tournament in December.

This year’s theme was “Trash Trek.” Of the 15 teams that competed at AACC, three of them advanced to the Maryland state tournament which will be held at University of Maryland Baltimore County in March 2016. Those teams are “Girls Generation” from Pasadena, “some trashy name” and Annapolis Middle T.A.C.O. Dragons.

FLL is a worldwide robotics program for 9-to-14-year olds. Using the LEGO® MINDSTORMS® robot set, teams build and program a robot to perform certain missions related to an annual theme. In addition to the robot performance, teams were judged in three areas: project relating to the theme, robot design and demonstration of FLL’s Core Values.

The annual competition has become a tradition for AACC faculty, staff and students, too. More than 50 of them and their families volunteered to work at the tournament and to help prepare for the event. They served as judges, referees, team escorts and set-up and tear-down assistants.
