AARP Anne Arundel County 2015 Tax Return Preparation

AARP will provide free tax preparation for seniors and low income clients at 10 sites in AA County from Jan.–Apr. 2016. Volunteer tax counselors are needed to help prepare tax returns on computers at each of the sites. In addition, volunteer appointment takers and greeters are needed to schedule client appointments and assist clients at such sites. Tax training for volunteer preparers and client facilitators will be held from on several dates from January 13-27, 2016; AARP membership is not required. Arundel Lodge

Arundel Lodge Psychiatric Rehabilitation Program partners with individuals and families to improve behavioral health through recovery-oriented services.  A variety of volunteer opportunities are available to help with Arundel Lodge projects, facilities maintenance, and events. 5:30-9:00 PM, Friday, Nov. 13, 2015, Hope Re-imagined Through Art Event: Volunteers are needed to help with this gala event showcasing great art and an up close and personal experience with aspiring Arundel Lodge artists. There will be delicious food and drink, live music, and a live and silent auction. Help is needed for the shift starting at 3:45 p.m. for set-up, parking attendants, greeter, coat check, registration, and raffle ticket sales. Help is needed for the next shift starting at 6:45 p.m. for closing the registration area, auction check-out, runner, and clean-up. Volunteers will have free admission and food and drink. Chesapeake Legal Alliance

The mission of the Chesapeake Legal Alliance (CLA) is to use the law to protect and restore the Chesapeake Bay. Our goal is to achieve a Bay with clean water, abundant native plants and animals, and opportunities for people to enjoy the Bay safely. CLA coordinates a network of attorneys who provide free legal services to individuals, environmental organizations, and community groups working to improve the health of the Chesapeake Bay and its watershed. The Alliance is announcing the following event:

10 AM, Sat., Nov. 7, 2015, The Chesapeake Bay: What Ails It and What is Being Done About It: This educational event being held at the Annapolis Yacht Club at 2 Compromise St. in Annapolis will cover the Chesapeake Bay, its problems, and what is being done about them. The speakers include: Russell Stevenson, Chairman of the Chesapeake Legal Alliance, Congressman Chris Van Hollen, 8th Congressional District, Secretary Ben Grumbles, Maryland Secretary of the Environment. Hawkins Cove Fall Plantathon, 10:30 a.m., Sat., Nov. 14, 2015

The Housing Authority of the City of Annapolis and the Watershed Stewards Academy are promoting the Hawkins Cove Plantathon community environmental project. Volunteer Tree Planting Coaches are needed to supervise planting of 40 trees, a conservation landscape, and a rain garden at Eastport Terrace and Harbour House in Annapolis by children and adult residents at the complexes. Coaches will meet at the Rosalie E. Mitchell Community Center, 1014 President Street, Annapolis, MD 21403 at 9:30 a.m. for orientation, and the Plantathon starts at 10:30 a.m. and goes until done (or 4:00 p.m. at the latest). Light refreshments will be available at the Mitchell Center, which will be open throughout the event. Holes will be pre-dug and soil amendment, mulch, stakes and other supplies will be staged at the planting areas so there will be no heavy lifting. Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary

Volunteers of all ages can help in four categories: ecological research, environmental education, stewardship, and behind-the-scenes. Participate for a day or for years; work on a group or solo project; collect water samples, clear trails, guide visitors on nature walks, lead canoe trips, be a box turtle caretaker, welcome visitors, and much more. 2–5 PM, Sat., Nov. 7, 2015, Jug Bay 30th Anniversary Mini-Event: This event being held at the McCann Wetlands Center will celebrate Jug Bay’s 30th birthday to show volunteers, friends, and members our appreciation for supporting the Sanctuary. The event will be held rain or shine, and there is no entrance fee. There will be finger food, beverages, birthday cake, live music, photo booth, crafts and games for kids, and guided tours. Spotlight on the Military-Community Showcase, Tues, November 17, 2015

Spotlight on Military-Community Showcase: A one-stop shop for area service members, retirees, veterans, and their families looking for ways to engage with our local community through volunteering. The Anne Arundel County Volunteer Center, The Volunteer Center Serving Howard County and the Fort Meade Army Volunteer Corps will hold their second “Spotlight on the Military” event on Tuesday, November 17, 2015, from 12:00 to 2:00 PM at the McGill Training Center, 8452 Zimborski Ave., Fort Meade 20755. This event will provide opportunities for veterans, service members, retirees and their families to meet representatives from a number of community organization so they can volunteer and make a difference in the community. Youth HealthWorks Program

The Youth HealthWorks Program works with low income youth between the ages of 17-24 who have dropped out of school and are looking for permanent employment in a health care setting. No training or GED required. The program offers: GED prep and GED Classes at no cost; local hands-on training and experience in partnership with AA Medical Center; mentoring and help with daily living through Restoration Community Development Corp.; job placement assistance, assistance with record expungement; and, transportation to and from sites. Program hours are Mon. & Thurs. 2–6 p.m. for participants with high school diplomas/GED and Tues. & Wed. 4–8 p.m. for participants seeking ABE/GED.
