Post-Thanksgiving Concert: Heartbeat, music for flute and percussion

“Fourth Fridays” Concert Series continues on November 27 with a post-Thanksgiving program for family and friends. Enjoy “Heartbeat,” music for flute and percussion. The flute and drum are two of the most ancient instruments known to humankind.  Join Karen Johnson and Manny Arciniega as they travel from the temples of Ancient Bali and Japan to the Brothels of Argentina, to the Electronica of today. This concert is part of the 4th Friday Ganz and Friends Concert Series held at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Annapolis, 333 Dubois Road in Annapolis. Tickets are $15 at the door. The program includes New Zealand composer Gareth Farr’s evocative “Kembang Suling” – Three snapshots of three countries -Bali (Indonesia), Japan and India for flute and marimba. There’s also, Astor Piazolla’s “L’Histoire du Tango” (music to dance to) and some beautiful siciliano’s by J.S.Bach arranged for flute and various percussion.  Another highlight will be a solo percussion performance where Manny will use anything but traditional percussion instruments to produce a captivating piece of music.  The duo will also play Argentinian composer Martin Gendelman’s “Shapes of the Wind” for alto flute and vibes and conclude the program with a special surprise using electronic music.

Karen Johnson is known for her colorful style with a diverse repertoire ranging from the sacred to the popular.  She has appeared with pop star Stevie Wonder as well as with classical (Bach and other) groups.  Manny Arciniega has worked with world renowned conductors/orchestras and has also played buckets on the Netflix original TV series House of Cards.

This program is part of a Brian Ganz and Friends ticketed concert series offered monthly on the 4th Friday at 8 pm at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Annapolis (UUCA). A Friday Five Pack ticket ($12 per concert) can be obtained at the door for $60. The next concert is January 22 with Italian guitarist Flavio Sala.  There will be no December concert.  See www.tinyurl.com/UUCA-concerts for future programming.
