Join Trash Free Maryland and Annapolis Green for a presentation on plastic pollution in our local waters. The recent 15-day Chesapeake Bay Trash Trawl found plastic in all 60 samples collected throughout the Maryland portion of the Bay. Find out what this means for public health, the health of the Bay, and what can you do about this toxic pollution that has already entered the world food chain?
Speakers include:
- Julie Lawson, Trash Free Maryland
- Maryland Delegate Clarence Lam (D-District 12)
- Stiv Wilson, The Story of Stuff Project
- A representative from the Ocean Conservancy (invited)
- A long-distance off-shore sailor (invited)
The issue of plastic marine debris was so shocking to sailors during the last Volvo Ocean Race that a three-hour summit on the issue was held during the Newport stopover this summer. But the plastic you can’t see – from microbeads to photo-degraded plankton-size particles is even more dangerous as marine life mistakes that for food.
Learn more about how plastics move from littering our streets to contaminating the fish on our dinner plates.
The presentation is sponsored by Saint Andrew’s United Methodist Church & Day School and the Annapolis Community Foundation.
Free, but donations to Trash Free Maryland and Annapolis Green will be gratefully accepted.
When: Tuesday, Oct. 13, 7 pm.
Where: Annapolis Maritime Museum, 723 Second Street, Annapolis, Md.
