Box of Rain welcomes Karen Colburn as new Executive Director

ColburnBoxofRainBox of Rain, an Annapolis-based 501(c)3 organization that has mentored more than 500 disadvantaged youth through its maritime programs, has named Karen Colburn as its new Executive Director.

“Our Board of Directors has given its unanimous support to Karen Colburn. Selected by the Annapolis and Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce as Nonprofit of the Year in 2014, Box of Rain has demonstrated its commitment to enriching the lives of disadvantaged kids aged 9–14.” said Anne Harrington, Board Chair.  “There’s more work to do, and we look forward to expanding our program to serve greater numbers of kids with mentoring programs all the way through high school. We’re confident that Karen’s deep experience in nonprofits will help us reach these goals.”

Box of Rain was founded in 2003 to honor the memory of Lee Griffin, a dedicated sailor and Annapolis community member who was the victim of a violent crime. Its mission is to nurture self-esteem and develop life skills that lead to positive contributions to the community.

Ms. Colburn’s background uniquely positions her to move the organization forward. She brings more than 20 years of executive-level experience directing nonprofit programs and helping small nonprofits reach their growth potential. She also has experience in leading public education advocacy efforts. And as a frequent family sailor on the Chesapeake Bay for the last 20 years, Ms. Colburn understands the power of sailing and Bay activities in making a difference in young peoples’ lives: “I am honored to become a part of an organization that tackles its mission with such sincere passion and commitment. There is important work ahead that can change the lives of so many youth and strengthen the fabric of our town. I look forward to working with our schools, local business, and the community to develop programming that keeps our kids safe, nurtures their self-esteem, builds skills, and steers them toward a bright future.”

Karen Colburn holds an M.A. in Journalism from Ohio State University and a B.A. in Psychology from Miami University of Ohio.
