Win over Altoona clinches Baysox division championships

BaysoxThe Bowie Baysox are the 2015 Eastern League Western Division Champions after a 6-3 win over Altoona Thursday night. The title clinching win came in the Baysox final home game of the regular season. 

The Baysox clinched their first playoff berth since 2012 with a win Monday night and their second division title in franchise history (2008) with Thursday’s win. Since the Baysox have clinched first place, the first home playoff game will be played Friday, September 11. The first two games of the five game series will be played on the road at the home field of the team that finishes second in the Western Division. 

It was a five-run third inning that spurred the Baysox to victory Thursday. Three of the Baysox five hits in the game came during that inning, including a three-run home run from Quincy Latimore that sealed the victory. The home run was Latimore’s team-leading 18th of the season.   

The Curve struck first in the top of the second inning with a two out rally against Baysox starter Nick Additon. Sebastian Valle drew a two-out walk and scored on a Jacob Stallings double to left field to make the score 1-0. 

Bowie blew the game open with five runs in the bottom of the third inning against Altoona starter Tyler Eppley, who was making his Double-A debut. Garabez Rosa hit a lead-off single to center field and Ozzie Martinez then drew a walk. Rosa was thrown out at third base when Glynn Davis reached on a fielder’s choice and Corban Joseph followed with a single to right field that plated Martinez. Mike Yastrzemski walked to load the bases and Trey Mancini brought home a second run with a sacrifice fly. Latimore finished things off with a three-run home run to left-center field that gave the Baysox a 5-1 lead. 

Altoona got one run back in the top of the fifth inning. Stetson Allie hit a lead-off single to center field and moved to third base on a pair of groundouts before scoring on a two-out wild pitch to make the score 5-2.

The Baysox added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Mancini hit a lead-off double and moved to third base on a Latimore fly out. Tucker Nathans drew a walk, Brett McKinney replaced Eppley on the mound. David Freitas then brought Mancini home on a sacrifice fly to give Bowie a 6-2 lead.

Facing reliever Andrew Robinson in the top of the seventh inning, Jacob Stallings hit a solo home run to left-center field to make the score 6-3.

Additon threw six innings and allowed two runs on three hits while striking out two and walking one in the win. Reliever Andrew Robinson allowed one run on one hit while striking out two in the top of the seventh inning. Ashur Tolliver recorded the first out of the eighth inning and closer Andrew Triggs recorded the final five outs for his team-leading 17th save of the season. Triggs entered the game in the eighth inning with one out and runners at the corners, but was able to get out of the jam to protect the Baysox lead. 

Eppley took the loss for Altoona, throwing 5.1 innings and allowing six runs on four hits and three walks while striking out three. 

The Baysox depart for their final five game road series of the season in Erie Friday.
