The Anne Arundel County Police have followed the Annapolis Police Department’s lead and initiated a program for people to make safe transactions for online purchases. The following announcement was sent out by AACoPD.
The Anne Arundel County Police Department shares the rising concern associated with conducting online classified transactions. Sites such as Craigslist, on-line yard sales on Facebook, and Oodle are just a few sites that often require transactions to be finalized in person. As a law enforcement agency, we recognize that these finalized transactions provide an opportunity for the criminal element to take advantage of unsuspecting law abiding citizens. It is because of this, that the Anne Arundel County Police Department is offering our facilities as a “Transaction Safe Place”. The buyers and sellers are invited to use any of our four district locations, as well as headquarters as a safe place to meet and conduct their transaction(s). The use of the front parking lot and/or lobby provides a safe, public place, to meet yet serve as a deterrent for criminals.
Along with our commitment to personal safety, the Anne Arundel County Police Department is willing to assist, when needed, to ensure that a transaction does not involve stolen property. If a buyer would like to check on an item, an officer will be dispatched to check the item’s serial number in NCIC, or National Crime Information Center databases. The “Transaction Safe Place” can be utilized at any of the following locations and times.
