Win brings Baysox on the brink of playoffs

[do action=”fringe”/]

BaysoxRF Mike Yastrzemski hit a first inning two-run home run to kick off a four-hit night and the Baysox defeated Reading 6-2 at First Energy Stadium on Saturday night. The win coincided with losses from Altoona and Akron helped the Baysox cause.

Bowie’s magic number to reach the playoffs is down to two with Akron’s loss to Richmond. That means a Baysox Sunday afternoon win combined with an Akron loss would clinch a postseason birth. The Baysox are seeking a sixth playoff trip in the 23 year history of the franchise.

Altoona lost at home to Trenton so the Baysox magic number towards a division crown is five. The Baysox have won the Western Division in the regular season just once in club history when the 2008 team won 84 games to claim the crown.

Bowie jumped out early on Reading starter Nick Pivetta. After Yastrzemski’s two-run home run opened the scoring, the Baysox added a run in the second inning before the big third. Leading 3-1, Yastrzemski was hit by a pitch to open the inning. He then scored on a gapper to right-center by 1B Trey Mancini. Consecutive walks loaded the bases and DH Brandon Snyder’s hard ground ball single down the left field line plated two runs and knocked Pivetta from the game. Bowie had a 6-1 lead.

Starter Nick Additon battled through four and 2/3rd innings before giving way to reliever Jason Stoffel. Stoffel retired all four batters faced, RHP Marcel Prado worked two scoreless innings and Andrew Triggs closed the door with a scoreless ninth inning in the 6-2 win.

Bowie looks for a series split and a trip to the postseason Sunday, August 30th at 1:35 p.m. with LHP Ariel Miranda on the slab. Coverage will begin 20-minutes prior to first pitch on 1430wnav.com, baysox.com and the Tune-In Radio App by searching Bowie Baysox.

The Baysox return for their final homestand of the regular season Monday, August 31st at 7:05 p.m.against the Altoona Curve with major playoff ramifications potentially in place. Get tickets at 301-805-6000 or online at baysox.com.
