Aug 10: History Cruise: Sam Smith & the Defense of Baltimore: Robert Dudley

Sam Smith was the Commander of all American forces in the Defense of Baltimore in 1814. His military career began in the American Revolution when he came to Annapolis

to arrest the British Colonial Governor. Join us for an exciting look at the War on the Chesapeake 200 years ago and how Sam Smith helped save America!

Robert Dudley is the co-author of the recent book: Sam Smith, Star Spangled Hero

Aug 13:  Sailing Cruise with live music aboard the 74-foot Schooner Woodwind:  Enjoy music performed by local musicians during a two hour sunset cruise aboard the     74-foot Schooner Woodwind.

Don Shappelle sings and writes many songs about the Chesapeake Bay, it’s people, it’s boats and the many rivers that flow into the bay. Don grew up on the banks of the mighty Susquehanna River so many of his songs are influenced by that great river. Don also performs sailing and water oriented songs by other artists. Don Shappelle accompanies his songs on 6 & 12 string guitar and harmonica. He has performed up and down the Chesapeake Bay in many settings over the years and counts singing onboard the Woodwind as one of his favorites. Performing with Don is vocalist and bassist Don Sennett who helps to create a full sound of harmonies and musical interplay between the two. www.donshappellemusic.com

Aug 20:  Sailing Cruise with live music aboard the 74-foot Schooner Woodwind with Mike & Kelly Lange:

Enjoy music performed by local musicians during a two hour sunset cruise aboard the 74-foot Schooner Woodwind.

Mike and Kelly Lange are a husband and wife ukulele duo.  Lifelong boaters, Mike & Kelly sing original and classic material, some with a maritime theme and some with a broader reach.

Mike has played thousands of gigs in the mid-Atlantic and a handful overseas during the past several decades. Over the years he has performed with many popular bands in the Baltimore/Washington area both as a bandleader, member, and freelance musician. His original music has been featured on numerous radio stations in the mid-Atlantic area including WRNR, WPFW, WTMD, and WHFS as well as many independent radio stations overseas.  Mike is best known for performing with the Eastport Oyster Boys, Tiki Barbarians, and Boogie Express bands. Known as an accomplished pianist, Mike plays ukulele and melodica on the Woodwind.Having spent years performing in choirs and plays, Kelly is well known for her beautiful voice and tasteful strumming on her mango tenor ukulele.

Aug 23: Wine in the Wind Cruise aboard the 74-foot Schooner Woodwind:

Join us for a three hour sail around the Bay sampling wonderful wines from Argentina.  A representative from the wineries will introduce you to these special wines. This will be a relaxing sail including 3-oz samples of each of the four wines featured. Along with each wine is a delicious, perfectly paired bite (we call them magnificent morsels) to go with each wine.  After the sampling, there will be a small afternoon appetizer buffet that will pair well with any wines you would like to purchase by the glass to enjoy on the rest of your sail. After the tasting of the wines, crew will bring out an Appetizer Buffet that will pair well with any wines you would like to purchase by the glass. 

Ticket Includes: Four, 3 oz. wine samples, hors d’oeuvres, Schooner Woodwind limited edition wine glass and unlimited sodas and water. Does not include gratuity

Depart Annapolis at 2:00pm, return at 5:00pm.

Aug 27:  Sailing Cruise with live music aboard the 74-foot Schooner Woodwind: 

Victoria Vox has taken the artful sound of the ukulele into eclectic new directions. Her music ranges from upbeat and clever to honest and moving, while incorporating her signature “mouth trumpet” and occasionally singing in French. Her whimsical songwriting uses a unique palette of sounds and beats that delight audiences of all ages. Her songs have been featured on NPR, television and in independent films. In 2009, Vox was invited to be an Artist in Residence (AIR) at the Strathmore Performing Arts Center (Bethesda, MD), and has since continued to support the new AIRS. Vox is also multi-award winning songwriter. She received First Place for her French tune, ‘C’est Noyé’ and Runner up for the 40′s-esque “My Darlin’ Beau” in the International Acoustic Music Awards. Vox has won six Wammies (Washington Area Music Awards): Contemporary Folk Vocalist (’09, ’11 & ’12), Album of the Year (’10 & ’11), and Fan Favorite (’10), as well as the “Vox Pop” Award with her album, Exact Change, in the 10th Annual Independent Music Awards. She has been included in Relix Magazine and Washington D.C.’s City’s Best lists of artists to watch. Vox Originally from Green Bay, WI, Vox now lives in Baltimore, MD

Aug 31: History Cruise: Bay Ridge on the Chesapeake: Carol Patterson

Author and Bay Ridge resident, Carol Patterson will discuss the history of Bay Ridge with a special focus on 1886-1903 when the area was the “Queen Resort of the Chesapeake” and included a grand Victorian summer resort with a large frame hotel on the bluff near Tolly Point and hosted thousands of daily visitors who arrived by railroad and steamship. Among the attractions were the all-day band concerts, dining and dancing pavilions, games and amusements, the gravity road, picnic grounds, and a 2 mile electric trolley ride that wound along the river and lake shores.

Carol Patterson is the co-author of the popular book Bay Ridge on the Chesapeake, An Illustrated History.
