The 333 Coffeehouse, Annapolis’ monthly listening space for folk and acoustic music, is delighted to present a return engagement by Hot Soup!

The trio HOT SOUP! simmers with intelligent lyrics, zany humor, spirited musicality and scrumptious three-part harmony. The ingredients for this delectable concoction are the blended solo talents of Sue Trainor, Christina Muir and Jennie Avila. Their recordings continue to place this nationally touring trio among the most-played artists on international acoustic radio. Hot Soup’s live shows “sparkle,” said Sing Out! Magazine. The trio brings a rare blend of spontaneity and intimacy to their performances, often developing hilarious exchanges among themselves and with the audience. The trio’s musical diversity extends to their instrumentation, including a variety of guitar stylings, harp, conga, ubang (a variety of udu), and small percussion such as kokkirico and window shutter. The focus, however, is always the sweet voices, trading lead vocals and capturing harmonies that raise goose bumps. No surprise, really. All three are talented solo performers with recordings of their own in addition to Hot Soup, Soup Happens, and their latest release The Way You Like It.
Hot Soup! are longtime favorites with folk audiences in the Mid-Atlantic region. They last performed at 333 in August 2012, opening 333’s revitalized series at its then-new venue, the Annapolis Friends’ Meeting House. Says 333 manager Tom Rhoads, “We wanted to bring them back because they’re not only terrific singers and players, but also, they’re just so much fun!”
About the individual Members of Hot Soup!
Sue Trainor has a long resumé of performances for both children and adults. Her music for adults shows off a satirical sense of humor, while with kids she displays a flair for imaginative musical play. Her children’s CD Under Tables, Out Back Doors (1999) received the Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Platinum Award and a Parents’ Choice recommendation.
Christina Muir brings a beautiful voice and skilled playing on guitar, mountain dulcimer and other instruments to the ensemble. She also writes delightful songs about love and life. Christina is the daughter of noted folksinger Ann Mayo Muir (of Bok, Muir & Trickett fame). In 2009 she spearheaded the production of Notes from Across the Sea, a recording of her mother’s instrumental compositions by the Grammy-nominated group Ensemble Galilei.
Jennie Avila plays percussion and guitar and expands the trio’s repertoire with her songwriting. In 2012 she released Love & Lore of the Civil War, a CD collection of compelling songs based on true stories of Civil War events, many in the vicinity of her home near the site of the Battle of Antietam. Prior to joining Hot Soup!, she gained attention on the Northeastern concert circuit in the duo Amy & Jennie (with Amy Torchia).
