Volunteer opportunities abound in Anne Arundel

Annapolis Youth Services Bureau

This organization provides youth oriented comprehensive professional services to youth for the general prevention of juvenile delinquency.  Mentors are needed for youth ages 5 – 18 after background checks and training. Volunteers are also needed for educational and cultural activities for children. AYSB is dedicated to serving as a positive force in improving the lives and wellbeing of children, by providing, and advocating for, prevention and early intervention programs and treatment services for children, youth, and families. Anne Arundel Ladies Civitan Club & Glen Burnie Clubs

Volunteers are needed to help make and sell pizzas at the Civitan Club Pizza Stand at the Glen Burnie Carnival from 6:15–11:00 p.m., Friday, July 31, 2015. The Carnival is located in downtown Glen Burnie, on the grounds of the Glen Burnie Improvement Association Building and across the street from the District Court/Multi-Service-Building. Free parking is available in the Anne Arundel County Parking Garage, adjacent to the carnival grounds. If you aren’t able to join us on the 31st, the Glen Burnie Clubs needs help on subsequent nights starting at 6:30 p.m., Aug. 1–8, 2015 except Sun., Aug. 2). Anne Arundel County Public Library

Library Branches have differing needs for both on-going projects and short-term volunteer activities. Some examples include cleaning and re-casing books, CD and DVD collections, assembly of Story-Time projects, copying, data processing or other computer projects, and file maintenance; ongoing tasks for daily morning shifts include helping with  unloading and processing delivery and looking on the shelves for requested items. Volunteer shifts are often flexible and may include some evenings or weekends in addition to day-time hours. Some Branches can work with volunteers as young as 14 and may keep applications on file to call prospective volunteers when needs arise. Training is provided. See www.aacpl.net. Department of Juvenile Services

The Maryland Department of Juvenile Services is looking for volunteers, age 21 and older, to serve as tutors, and provide mentoring. Background checks are required and training will be provided. Charles Carroll House

Volunteers are needed in the house and the gardens located on the grounds of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Annapolis in a variety of areas. The primary role of volunteers is to provide tours of the house both when the house is open and on an ad hoc basis for groups. We are happy to train any volunteers who wish to learn more about the fascinating story of the house. Help in the extensive gardens is welcome at any time, but especially in the spring. Facilities aides are also need to assist during events, and no experience is necessary. Special projects such as organization of the library, re-establishment of the gift shop and small maintenance projects are other potential volunteer opportunities. Greater Annapolis Interfaith Network (GAIN)

The Greater Annapolis Interfaith Network (GAIN),Inc. is an inclusive coalition of faith representatives who collaborate to raise awareness and change systemic injustices in the Greater Annapolis area.  Through our strengthened and broadened relationships, we share our talents and gifts to advocate for just opportunities for all. The purpose of GAIN is to foster community and justice in our local area through raising awareness of issues, supporting our member faith groups, and sharing our talents to achieve this goal. The public is always encouraged to attend our general meetings generally held the second Thursday of each month at 6:45pm in the Social Hall at St. John Neumann Roman Catholic Church, 620 N. Bestgate Rd., Annapolis. Check The Capital and the web site for program topics and to confirm meeting dates. Volunteers are needed from time to time for special events such as our annual festival. August 13, 2015, Film Festival: GAIN is in immediate need of a generous person to run the audio visual equipment for the Film Festival at St. John Neumann Church, 620 N Bestgate Rd, Annapolis, MD 21401. Wellness House of Annapolis

The mission of The Wellness House of Annapolis is to help people affected by cancer and their family members recover their health and well-being through participation in a professional program of support, education and hope in a “home-like” environment. All of our services are offered free to cancer patients and their care givers. There are many different volunteer opportunities at Wellness House of Annapolis. All services are offered to members for free by our amazing volunteers. We need assistance with our gardens, clerical work, outreach, and hostessing. 6:00pm – 10:00pm, Sat., August 29, 2015, La Fiesta Americana Fundraiser: Volunteers are needed to help in a variety of tasks at this gala fundraiser being held at Homestead Gardens in Davidsonville, MD. Guests will sample delicious offerings from local restaurants, dance to the hot sounds of award-winning Trio Caliente, and peruse dozens of fabulous silent auction items. West/Rhode Riverkeeper

A larger number of volunteers are needed to help plant marsh grasses at YWCA Camp Letts, 4003 Camp Letts Rd, Edgewater, MD 21037 in late July or Early August. This would be an ideal project for a civic minded volunteer group.
