Sandwich Serenades to begin July 12th

music-notes1The Annapolis Chamber Players will launch a summer music festival, the Annapolis Chamber Music Project, offering training to 17 young musicians and free daily concerts for the public during the week of July 12-17,  at the 1st Presbyterian Church of Annapolis, 171 Duke of Gloucester Street, Annapolis.

The kick-off concert will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, July 12, featuring Eric Ewazen’s “Ballade, Pastoral and Dance for Flute, French Horn and Piano” – a mix of Romanticism, rhythmic complexity and American jazz and folk influences, and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “Quintet in A Major K.581 for Clarinet and String Quartet.”

The “Sandwich Serenades” luncheon concerts will begin at noon each day in the church sanctuary. Featured artists include the U.S. Army String Quartet on Monday, July 13; the U.S. Naval Academy’s Woodwind Quintet on Tuesday, July 14; the Monumental Brass Quintet on Wednesday, July 15; the Annapolis Chamber Music Project faculty and students with guest Steven Rainbolt performing Beethoven’s Scottish Lieder (Op. 109) on Thursday, July 16; and project faculty and students with a grand finaléconcert on Friday, July 17.

Although each concert features guest artists, chamber project faculty and students may join the performances. During the week, students will have a daylong schedule of master classes, performance classes, lessons, small ensemble coaching and recitals.

Members of the Annapolis Chamber Music Project faculty include Gail Vehslage, flute; Heidi Brown, French horn; Grace Kim, piano; Johnathan Richards and Nicholas Curie, violins; Caroline Castleton, viola; Elizabeth Richards, cello; and Phyllis Crossen-Richardson, project executive director, on the clarinet.
