The Chesapeake Arts Center Gomer Gallery (CAC) will open a unique exhibition featuring Chesapeake Arts Center’s resident ceramic artist, Joe Vitek and artist Tom Rieley on July 3rd on view until Friday, July 31, 2015. The Pottery and Art Exhibit will feature nearly 60 pieces of pottery by Tom Rieley and Joe Vitek, as well as Asian calligraphy and photography. The Chesapeake Arts Center will be hosting a special “Meet the Artist” reception event on Friday, July 31, 2015 from 6:00pm-8:00pm. Free to the public.
Tom Rieley is an analyst with the federal government. His artistic interests are east Asian calligraphy and pottery. He has practiced calligraphy for eight years. He has made pottery at Chesapeake Arts Center for three years. The ceramic pieces on exhibit are gas- or wood-fired stoneware and include large storage jars, bottles, bowls, mugs and eight moon vases decorated with scenes from Asia. The calligraphy on exhibit are ink on paper and include landscapes, classic poetry and transcriptions from contemporary sources.
Tom lives in Western Anne Arundel County with his wife Yong Suk and daughter Katie. Tom thanks Joe Vitek, his teacher in ceramics at Chesapeake Arts Center; Jim Dugan from Baltimore Clayworks; Natalie Kossack, his first teacher at CAC; as well as Belinda Fraley Huesman, Executive Director; Nicole Caracia, Marketing Director; the staff and board and sponsors of CAC and especially fellow students of the Intermediate Pottery Wheel program for the opportunity to show his work. Joe Vitek: In 1964 after my 10 year Navy career as a hospital corpsman / medical artist I enrolled at the Corcoran School of Art. I first took courses in painting and drawing then transferred to Clay Arts where I first studied with Richard La Fean. I then transferred to an independent study program with the Japanese potter, Teruo Hara. After the Corcoran I worked as Mr.Hara’s studio assistant in his Warrenton, Virginia studio. While employed at the Virginia hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1966-1967 I worked at night as a studio assistant in the Clay Arts department at Carnegie Institute of Technology. In 1970, I was fortunate to obtain a summer internship at the Ichino Pottery in Tamba, Japan. Since then I’ve worked at several other studios including the Potter’s co-up in Berkley, California, a resident artist at the Baltimore Clay works and currently a resident artist at the Chesapeake Arts Center in Brooklyn Park, Maryland. The pottery on display is from 1966 to the present including work from the Warrenton, Virginia
kiln, Eastern market Pottery, Potter’s co-up, University of Guam, Tamba Japan, Nan Rothwell salt kiln in Crozet, Virginia, Baltimore Clay works and the Chesapeake Arts Center kiln in Brooklyn Park.
This exhibition is organized and circulated by the Chesapeake Arts Center. The Chesapeake Arts Center gallery is open Monday-Friday, 10am-6pm. Saturday, 10am-12:30pm.
