The Hammond-Harwood House Association announced the appointment of long-time museum professional Shawn Herne as its new Executive Director.  The Association, now in its seventy fifth year, owns and operates the eighteenth century Hammond Harwood House and garden on Maryland Avenue in Annapolis.    Mr. Herne begins as Executive Director of the Association on July 7 and will be responsible for strategically managing the non-profit, overseeing the day-to-day operations, and building new partnerships in the community.

“The Hammond-Harwood House is one of the finest examples of early American architecture,” said Herne. “It’s collection of the 18th century decorative arts is one of the best in the country.  I am delighted to have the opportunity to lead the effort to preserve and interpret this masterpiece.”

Jay Graham, President of the Board of Trustees of the Hammond-Harwood Association said, “On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I am pleased to welcome Shawn as he assumes the position of Executive Director of the Hammond-Harwood House. He is joining us as we celebrate our 75th anniversary. His depth of experience in the museum field and his skill as a storyteller will serve us well. We look forward to introducing him to the Annapolis community. “

For the past eleven years Mr. Herne has been the Chief Curator and Director of Development of the Babe Ruth Birthplace Foundation, owner and operator of the Babe Ruth Birthplace and the Sports Legends Museum at Camden Yards in Baltimore.  He has worked developing and administering museum exhibits and programs that are exciting and engaging, believing that the best visitor experiences come from museum elements that provoke thought and conversation.  Prior to joining the Babe Ruth Birthplace Foundation, Mr. Herne served as Curator of the B&O Railroad Museum and taught railroad history for the University of Baltimore. In 2000, he published The Railroad Timekeepers, a book on railroad timekeeping.  He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the International Sports Heritage Association and the Mid-Atlantic Association of Museums.

Mr. Herne considers himself an educator and political historian focusing on nineteenth century American political and social history.  He received a Master of Arts Degree in American History and Museum Studies in 1997 from the University of Delaware and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History and Political Science from Potsdam College in 1993.
