The Baysox dropped their second series in a row with a loss to Akron Wednesday afternoon by a score of 4-3. Elih Villanueva (7-6, 2.77) took his sixth loss of the season and the Baysox bats fell silent, managing just two hits for the remainder of the game after a three hit, two run first inning.
For the third game in a row, Akron scored first against Bowie. This time, Todd Hankins led off the game with a single, was moved to second on a groundout and then brought home with a single from Anthony Gallas to put the RubberDucks up 1-0 in the first.
But just as they had in the previous game, the Baysox scored in the bottom of the same inning to take the lead. Corban Joseph led off with a single and was moved to third on a single to center field from Quincy Latimore as Latimore moved to second base on the throw. Trey Mancini then came up to the plate with no outs and hit a long sacrifice fly to right field to score Joseph and move Latimore to third. Rossmel Perez followed with a single to right-center field to plate Latimore and give the Baysox a 2-1 lead.
Akron bounced back in the second to tie the game on a solo home run from Jeremy Lucas and took the lead back in the fourth inning on another solo home run, this time from Bryson Myles to give the RubberDucks a 3-2 lead.
In the fifth inning, Garabez Rosa hit a double to right field, was moved to third on a fly out from Ozzie Martinez, and scored on a sacrifice fly from Drew Dosch to tie the game back up at 3-3.
Akron stepped out in front for the final time in the sixth after Gallas led off with a double and was moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. Joe Sever struck out swinging but reached first on a wild pitch, which also allowed Gallas to score and give Akron a 4-3 lead and the eventual win.
Akron starter Mike Clevinger (6-4, 2.72) picked up his sixth win of the season after throwing 7.2 strong innings, Clevinger gave up just four hits while walking one and striking out three. Jeff Johnson, Akron’s closer, pitched a scoreless ninth for his 13th save of the season.
One bright note for the Baysox was that the bullpen had another scoreless outing. After struggling for three straight games, the bullpen has pitched lights out in the past two games. Today Jason Garcia (0-0, 0.00) pitched the eighth and Mychal Givens (4-2, 1.72) came on for the ninth with neither reliever allowing a hit.
The Baysox head to Altoona Friday for a 7:00 p.m. game with Mikey O’Brien (1-0, 3.38) on the mound against the Pirates top pitching prospect Tyler Glasnow (2-3, 2.91). The series at Altoona will be the Baysox final series before the All-Star break. Terry Doyle, Mychal Givens, Mike Yastrzemski, and Rossmel Perez were all elected to the All-Star game this year in Portland.
