Anne Arundel Community College’s Printmaking Club is showcasing prints and ceramics of former AACC student and artist M.J. Hedlund from July 22-Aug. 28, in the Cade Center for Fine Arts Gallery on the Arnold campus.

“The M.J. Hedlund Memorial Retrospective Show” is in memory of Hedlund, who donated her 80 framed prints and almost 200 ceramic pieces to the Printmaking Club before she died in November 2014. A reception where the public can learn more about her works is set for July 29 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the gallery. Proceeds from sales of the art will benefit the club and AACC’s printmaking program.

Hedlund always had a keen appreciation for fine art. She and her husband, the late Col. Kenneth Hedlund, Medical Corps, U.S. Army, collected paintings, jewelry, sculptures and rugs. Hedlund’s own artistry began with quilting piecework and glazing pre-made pottery. About 15 years ago, she began taking ceramics courses at AACC to craft her own pottery. She wove texture into her ceramic designs and was fascinated by the way color affected images. When she visited a fellow ceramicist in a printmaking class, she was fascinated about the range of textures she could create and colors she could use in that medium. She soon immersed herself into learning various printmaking techniques and often used her printmaking skills to create handmade books along with prints.

Hedlund participated in the Annapolis Potters Guild, was a founding member of the Muddy Creek Art Association, a member of the Kent Island Federation of Arts and one of the organizers of AACC’s Printmaking Club. She often exhibited in shows around Maryland.

Gallery summer hours are Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. For information about the event, contact Lindsay McCulloch, director, Cade Gallery, [email protected] or visit http://www.aacc.edu/visualarts/newsevents.cfm.
