2015Annapolis Irish Festival July 10-11, 2015

The 5th Annual Annapolis Irish Festival will be held Fri. & Sat., July 10-11, 2015 at The Anne Arundel County Fairgrounds. This event has quickly established itself as a signature event for the Mid-Atlantic region and this year, you can expect to see superstars of the Irish rock scene–Gaelic Storm and Carbon Leaf along with an incredible lineup of other artists! Kids are welcome and free under 12. A little leprechaun land is sure to delight with moon bounces, balloons, crafts, entertainment and PONIES. For the grown-ups, there will be a ton of bands, 3 stages, a giant tented viewing area, and plenty of local vendors offering food and merchandise! Your VIP ticket will include unlimited beer, special seating and viewing areas at the stages, limited lines, special entrance, and air conditioned private bathrooms. Volunteers are needed to help with a variety of tasks associated with the management of this event. Anne Arundel County Office of Emergency Management CERT Training

The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help. CERT members also are encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking a more active role in emergency preparedness projects in their community. The public is invited to attend the upcoming CERT training:

7-9 pm, Fri., July 10, 8 am–5 pm, Sat., July 11, and 8 am–5 pm, Sun., July 12, 2015, Basic CERT Training: Anne Arundel County and City of Annapolis Citizen Corps Council and CERT announce the second BASIC CERT class of 2015. The class will be on July 10-12, 2015, at the AA County Fire Dept. Training Academy, 415 Maxwell Frye Road Millersville, Maryland 21108. The CERT training class focuses on personal safety and preparedness over a weekend of intense instruction and practice culminating in participation in a mock disaster drill which will test your new-found learning over such topics as Incident Command, Disaster Preparedness, Fire Safety, First Aid, Light Search and Rescue, Disaster Psychology, and Terrorism. Classroom instruction is alternated with practical exercises. Participants must attend the full, 20-hour course given over all three days–July 10-12. There is a cost of $35 per person for supplies. Protective footwear (Steel toed boots recommended) are required for Saturday and Sunday. For registration and questions, contact Bruce Becker at [email protected].

Dyslexia Tutoring Program

This nonprofit organization trains volunteers to tutor low-income children and adults with dyslexia and other language-based learning differences. Volunteers should have a high school diploma, good language skills, patience, a willingness to understand persons with language disabilities, and the desire to help someone who wants to learn to read. Volunteer tutors are trained through a twenty-hour course in the Orton-Gillingham method of teaching reading, spelling, and writing, are subject to a criminal background check and must commit to 60 hours of tutoring. Habitat for Humanity of the Chesapeake

Habitat for Humanity of the Chesapeake is a nonprofit which provides simple, decent, affordable houses for deserving families who currently live in substandard conditions in Anne Arundel County and the Baltimore area. Volunteers are needed to help with construction in the county and Baltimore area. Many support volunteer opportunities also exist for behind-the-scenes staff and volunteers needed off site to fulfill our home building mission. These dedicated men and women prepare low-income families to become homeowners, plan our construction work, promote and publicize our work, fundraise, maintain relationships with volunteers and donors, and manage our finances. For volunteers interested in learning additional construction skills, and are willing to commit to regular volunteer days may want to consider becoming a “Red Hat” (volunteers who serve as construction leaders on build sites). Hope for All

Hope for All. is an all-volunteer non-profit Christian ministry serving families in need in the north AA County, Baltimore City areas and also the Appalachian region by collecting and distributing donated school supplies, household goods and furniture, and clothing. There is a great need for volunteers at Warehouse 146 which is normally open every Tues.–Thurs. from 9:30 am–3:00 pm for volunteers to sort clothes, for cleaning, helping in the yard sale area, or anything else that needs to get done. Call the warehouse at 410-766-0372 before coming. There is also a pressing need for donations of select furniture, household and linen items, clothing, and cleaning & toiletry items. We also need of volunteers to help pick-up and deliver furniture on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 8:30 am until 2:00 pm.  For more information, call 410-859-1297 or E-mail [email protected]. Hospice of the Chesapeake

This nonprofit organization helps families care for terminally ill loved ones in their homes or a home-like setting or wherever they need care. Volunteers play a vital role on the hospice team by providing patient care, serving as vigil volunteers, providing grief support, assisting administratively in our offices and in community outreach, helping at our resale shop, and more.  Become a hospice volunteer if you are age 18 and up and willing to complete volunteer training. In addition, donations of a variety of items and supplies are needed for the 2015 Camp Wish List.
