One person killed in Brooklyn Park fire, 10th fire fatality of year in Anne Arundel

Fatal FireOne person has been killed in an overnight dwelling fire in Brooklyn Park. Around 11:10 Wednesday night firefighters were dispatched for a reported dwelling on fire in the 5200 block of Disney Avenue following a neighbor’s report of flames coming from a window of the house. Firefighters from Anne Arundel County assisted by Baltimore City arrived and were able to extinguish the fire in the single family dwelling in less than 15 minutes. During search operations an adult female was removed from the dwelling and determined to be deceased on the scene.

Investigation into the fire is ongoing by members of the Anne Arundel County Fire and Explosives Investigation Unit. However, early indications are that this is an accidental fire possibly related to the use of smoking products in conjunction with home oxygen. The deceased was the only occupant of the home at the time of the fire.

Damages from the fire are estimated at $50,000. Other adult residents have been displaced from the dwelling but did not require assistance from the Red Cross. There were no other injuries.

It is unclear at this time whether working smoke alarms were in the dwelling and it is part of the ongoing investigation. However, it is recommended that smoke alarms be installed inside each bedroom, outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home, including the basement and that they be tested monthly.
