Steve Gunn, the editor of The Capital has accepted a position as the Editor of the Norfolk-based Virginian-Pilot. Associate Editor Rick Hutzell has been named new Editor for The Capital.
The Virginian-Pilot is owned by Landmark Media which hired Gunn in early 2013. The Capital was sold by Landmark to the Baltimore Sun in May of 2014 and remains an asset of the Baltimore Sun.
Former Capital publisher, Pat Richardson left Annapolis to head the Virginian-Pilot several months ago. In a newsroom announcement this morning, Richardson lauded Gunn’s track record of developing talent and his digital experience. According to sources, Gunn will begin his new position on June 8, 2015.
The Virginian-Pilot is also home to several other former Capital Gazette employees including reporters Scott Daugherty and Elizabeth Hulette.
First @LizHulette, then me, then Publisher Pat Richardson and now Editor @sgunn. The @capgaznews newsroom keeps moving south to @PilotNews
