2 killed in Arnold crash

fatal-accidentUPDATE:  From the Anne Arundel County Police:

On Tuesday May 5, 2015 at approximately 7:08 p.m., officers responded to a multi-vehicle motor vehicle collision on northbound Ritchie Hwy (MD-2) at College Parkway in Arnold.

Preliminary investigation determined that a Nissan Sentra was southbound on Ritchie Hwy facing a red left turn arrow. The driver of that vehicle turned left towards College Pkwy in the path of a GMC truck that was headed northbound on Ritchie Hwy. The GMC struck the passenger side of the Nissan causing it to overturn. The vehicles eventually came to rest after the GMC pushed the Nissan sideways out of the intersection into the traffic signal support pole.

The driver of the Nissan was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the GMC, who was ejected, was taken by ambulance to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center with critical injuries. He died not long after arrival.

The cause of the collision appears to be the failure of the Nissan driver to obey the red left turn signal arrow. A contributing factor appears to be alcohol use by the Nissan driver.

The Traffic Safety section will be handling the investigation.
