Quick start leads Baysox to sweep

BaysoxThe Baysox scored four runs in the first inning and had tallied seven runs by the end of the third inning on the way to a 13-3 win and three-game series sweep of the Erie SeaWolves Wednesday afternoon. The three-game road sweep is the first by the Baysox since June 16-18, 2014 at Trenton. Bowie’s offense exploded for season-highs in runs, hits (17) and margin of victory (10 runs).

Baysox starter Dylan Bundy exited the game after pitching his allotted three innings. He threw three perfect frames and struck out five batters before being replaced by reliever Ashur Tolliver in the bottom of the fourth inning. Tolliver threw three innings and allowed two runs on two hits while striking out two. Bobby Bundy threw two innings and allowed one run on three hits and three walks while striking out two. Reliever Ben Rowen pitched a scoreless ninth inning to finish out the game.

The Baysox continued a trend of quick starts with four runs in the top of the first inning against Erie starter Chad Green. The first four batters of the inning reached base with Mike Yastrzemski singling, Garabez Rosa and Sean Halton doubling and Brandon Snyder drawing a walk. With one out, Quincy Latimore walked to load the bases and Jason Esposito followed with an RBI single to left field. Derrik Gibson brought home the final run of the inning on an RBI groundout to give the Baysox a big lead.

Bowie added to the lead in the top of the second inning with some help from Brandon Snyder. The first baseman picked up his first hit with the Baysox since 2009 – a two-run homer to right-center field to put the Baysox up 6-0. The home run was the Baysox first since April 21.

The Baysox tacked on another run in the top of the third inning before running Green from the game. Latimore hit a lead-off double to center field and scored on a two-out Yastrzemski single to left field to make the score 7-0.

The SeaWolves got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning against Tolliver. Wynton Bernard hit a lead-off single to center field and Brendan Harris followed with a walk before Corey Jones brought them both home with a double to right field to make the score 7-2.

Bowie blew the game open in the top of the seventh inning with six more runs, the first four coming off Erie reliever Joe Mantiply. Seven of the first eight batters reached base to start the inning, with the only out being a sacrifice fly by Halton. Chris O’Brien capped off the scoring with a three-run homer off Erie reliever Brennan Smith to put the Baysox out front 13-2.

Erie got one run back in the bottom half of the inning against Bobby Bundy. Jeff McVaney and Miguel Gonzalez each drew one-out walks and Connor Harrell then brought McVaney home with an infield single to make the score 13-3.

The Baysox are off Thursday and begin a seven-game homestand Friday, May 1 with games against the Harrisburg Senators and Akron RubberDucks. The homestand runs through Thursday, May 7 and includes a pair of fireworks nights.
