A program of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, the Maryland Forest Service and the Anne Arundel County Watershed Stewards Academy, the Backyard Buffers program provides homeowners free trees and shrubs to create a native woodland buffer. A woodland buffer: enhances your landscape, creates habitat for wildlife and reduces the amount of sediment, fertilizer, and toxic materials that enter our waterways. Deep-rooted trees and shrubs can also stabilize stream banks, protecting them from erosion.

Anne Arundel Watershed Stewards Academy is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to identify, train and support community leaders, called Watershed Stewards, to take action with their neighbors to restore local waterways in Anne Arundel County. Watershed Stewards Academy is housed at Arlington Echo Outdoor Education Center, which is the Outdoor and Environmental Education Center of Anne Arundel County Public Schools.
