Pediatric Group provides thousands of books to promote literacy

righttime_annapolis_remodel_exterior_nightThe Maryland chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics (MD-AAP) reports that 20 percent of low-income children in Maryland are not ready to enter kindergarten, a statistic that the Pediatric Group is helping to change in Anne Arundel County.

Last year, the Pediatric Group, with offices in Crofton, Davidsonville and Severna Park, were among the first pediatric practices in the state to receive a grant from the MD-AAP to launch its Reach Out and Read program. As a program participant, the Pediatric Group gives all younger patients a book at each well visit between 6 months and 5 years.

The Reach Out and Read program has been so successful that the Pediatric Group healthcare providers have given out more than 5,000 books.

Reach Out and Read is a national nonprofit organization that promotes early literacy by making books a routine part of pediatric care. The physicians and nurse practitioners at the Pediatric Group received special training from Reach Out and Read to encourage parents to read aloud to their children. By building on the unique relationship between parents and medical providers, Reach Out and Read and the Pediatric Group will help families and communities encourage early literacy skills so Anne Arundel County children will enter school prepared for success.

“Our providers are passionate about the power of books to establish a strong foundation for success in our youngest patients.” says Robert G. Graw, Jr., M.D., Managing Partner of the Pediatric Group, “We are tremendously thankful to the Maryland chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics that we can be part of the Reach Out and Read program.”
