County and City to celebrate Green Restaurant Week

BaroakAnne Arundel County Executive Steve Schuh and City of Annapolis Mayor Mike Pantelides have announced that Green Restaurant Week will be held from March 16-20. Local residents are encouraged to visit restaurants that have been certified under the Annapolis and Anne Arundel County Environmental Stewardship Program. This program certifies and recognizes “green” restaurants that use locally grown products, implement systems or processes that improve energy efficiency and conserve water, and offer instruction on sustainable practices.

“The restaurant industry is an important part of Anne Arundel County’s economy,” said County Executive Steve Schuh. “The businesses that make a special effort to use local products and be energy efficient deserve recognition.”

The County and City formed a partnership in March of 2013 to educate business owners, managers, and their staff about how to make their businesses more environmentally friendly.  Special emphasis was placed on programs for restaurants seeking to incorporate locally sourced food into their menus and commercial composting.

Under the program, businesses earn points from a checklist of categories including: serving local food, energy efficiency improvements, water conservation, environmental education efforts and more.  Certified businesses will be given website recognition, a certificate and a decal to display to let their customers know about their environmental efforts.

Free technical assistance and resource referrals are a key part of the program. This free voluntary certification program is part of the Department of Neighborhood and Environmental Program’s Sustainable Annapolis initiative. Annapolis businesses interested in learning more about the program should contact Maria Broadbent at (410) 263-7946 and County businesses should contact Lisa Barge at (410) 222-7410.

“We hope that you will join us and celebrate the efforts of these Environmental Stewards during Green Restaurant Week,” Mayor Pantelides said.  “They are providing some of the best dining options in the area, while going the extra mile to protect our environment.”

The City and County will partner on the upcoming events:
