On February 17, 2015 at approximately 7:45 p.m., officers from the Northern District responded to the 600 block Kuethe Road for a report of a shooting that had just occurred.

Upon arrival, officers located a 23-year-old male of Halethrope, suffering from a gunshot wound to his stomach.  In addition, officers located a female, who was identified as the victim’s girlfriend, as well as the victim’s father, Ronald Ernest Phelps, 54, of the above address.  The victim’s father advised that he was cleaning his shotgun when it accidentally discharged, striking his son in the stomach.

Northern District Detectives responded and assumed responsibility for the investigation.  The Criminal Investigation Division Homicide Unit also responded to assist in the investigation. The victim’s girlfriend and father were both interviewed. After checking with the Maryland State Police, it was learned that the father was prohibited from owning a firearm. Detectives conducted interviews and concluded that this appeared to be accidental. There was no evidence of a struggle or argument.

The father advised that he was cleaning the shotgun and the gun accidentally discharged and struck his son.

Detectives executed a search warrant at the residence and located the gun used in this incident as well as a rifle and ammunition. In addition, Northern District Tactical Narcotics Detectives responded to assist with the search warrant and recovered over 200 grams of marijuana from the apartment.

Detectives charged the father, Ronald Phelps, with possession with intent to distribute marijuana, possession of marijuana, as well as illegally possessing a shotgun, rifle, and ammunition as a prohibited person.  Phelps was booked and processed at Northern District.  Detectives will consult with the States Attorney’s Office in reference to the discharging of the shotgun.  At this time, it is believed that this was an accidental discharging.

Suspect: Ronald Ernest Phelps, 54, of the 600 block of Kuethe Road, Glen Burnie, MD 21060
